The Ostrava-Olomouc studio Perun Creative, which created the survival game Hobo: Tough Life, presented its new project today. And if you want to get back to the bums, you’ll have to treat yourself, because a new retro shooter is coming out right now. quark planted in alternative version of the post-Soviet Czech Republic in the 1980s last century.

Shooter Quark, which is also being developed by the Perun Creative studio and the Recent Past company, is described as a tribute to the classics of the 90s genre, including Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D or Wolfenstein 3D. This is probably why, at the beginning of the game, you wake up alone in a cell of an abandoned prison, with screams and explosions nearby. And this despite the fact that you had to become an employee of the Quark company, which specializes in clean nuclear energy and which is looking for miners for uranium mines.

Working in a uranium mine may sound crazy, but in the alternative Czech Republic invented by the creators, there is a shortage of highly paid work. And although Quark offers a difficult and dangerous shift, thanks to propaganda, the company clearly has no shortage of applicants. But laughing at the losers probably won’t work. Instead, it will be necessary to find out how we ended up in prison, why all the other prisoners escaped and what is really going on around.

Quark runs on the Unreal 5 engine., which allows you to combine retro stylized graphics with modern procedures, such as adaptive sound or the latest rendering techniques. We can also count on number of weapons including wrenches, grenades, bazookas or EK-48. Then we will be able to try out all these tricks against unique, varied and demanding enemies, which will require nimble tactics, quick weapon switching, constant movement and quick thinking.

Since it’s a retro shooter, of course it’s not to be missed either. interactive levels that reward you for thorough exploration with hidden easter eggs, extra perks or achievements. And if you believe the first teaser, which you can see above, at least some the enemies could even speak Czech to us.

A release date for the Kvark shooter has not yet been announced, but the game will first go to PC, i.e. Steam, where it should be available in early access for about 12 months. The Early Access version will initially offer the first episode and core game mechanics, while the final version must contain 5 unique chapters, each of which will offer several levels with unique puzzles or interactions. Chapters will be released gradually, and eventually Kvark will also be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. And yes, at least on PC. we can also count on official czech subtitles.

In conclusion, it is worth mentioning that we already have one project in the works, to which Quark is not very far away. Of course, we are referring to the excellent retro shooter Hrot, whose author Spytihněv, on the contrary, intends to leave early access on Steam sometime in May/May or June/June of this year. However, at this point in time, we don’t think the creators of Quark and Hroth could be in trouble. For example, the visual styling of the two titles is very different, despite the retro style, and the settings are very different.

Yes, in both cases we have our country of the 1980s, but Hroth is betting on a communist Czechoslovakia after some kind of nuclear catastrophe, and not on an alternative post-Soviet Czech Republic. That’s why we think that Hroth and Quark could complement each other perfectly and also to show that it is possible to create high-quality first-person shooters in our region.
