Intel today announced very sad news, on March 24, at the age of 94, Gordon Moore, who stood at the very birth of this company, died. He founded it with Robert Noyce in July 1968 and worked for it for several decades, also as CEO for a while. He finally left only in 2006, after which he devoted himself mainly to charitable work. He and his wife founded a foundation that has donated more than $5 billion to charitable causes since its inception in 2000.

However, Moore became famous as early as 1965 when he stated that the number of transistors in a circuit was doubling every year. Ten years later, he changed his forecast every two years. Somehow, this idea went down in history as Moore’s law, and it actually worked for several decades, although it has slowed down somewhat in recent years as we slowly approach certain physical limits.

“Gordon Moore has defined the tech industry with his knowledge and vision” – says the current head of Intel Pat Gelsinger. “He helped unlock the power of transistors, inspiring technologists and entrepreneurs for decades. We at Intel continue to be inspired by Moore’s law and want to follow it as long as the periodic table allows. Gordon’s vision is our right direction, using the power of transistors to improve the lives of all people on Earth. My career and much of my life has been shaped by the opportunities that Gordon has created at the head of Intel, and I appreciate the honor and responsibility to continue his legacy.”
