This week, San Francisco hosts the GDC event, where game developers from around the world present new knowledge. Epic Games also had its own conference, which presented news related to Unreal Engine 5 at the State of Unreal event. One of the most interesting was Metahuman Animator. Metahuman technology is used to create characters faster, however, as the name suggests, Animator allows you to create facial animations very quickly.
While the classic post-capture process for an actor takes quite a long time (even weeks), Metahuman Animator simply takes the footage and transforms it into a playable character in a matter of minutes. The result is a very beautiful animation, which then “only” needs to be edited, which greatly speeds up the whole process.
In addition to the live demo, we also got a video from Ninja Theory showing the technology in a short demo from Senua’s Saga Hellblade II. In it we can see a frame with the main character, played by actress Melina Jurgens.
Unfortunately, we did not learn any new information about the game as such. All we know so far is that the game is coming to PC and Xbox Series X|S.
Metahuman Animator should be available within a few months, we don’t know the exact date either.
