Fire Emblem: Engage – review on INDIAN

Fire Emblem is still a little known series in the Czech Republic. Think of it like a Japanese, more comprehensive XCOM. So, in addition to tactical battles, you will find a battle with the greatest evil in the universe, an emphasis on communication with the team and building relationships, as well as an original and well-developed combat system. We recently saw the continuation of the Xenoblade JRPG series, which is completely unafraid of its origins and adds both quirkiness and complexity, bringing something unique and winning the hearts of fans and critics alike. Fire Emblem Engage is a bit similar. Taken from the latest Xenoblade ability to connect characters and perfectly completes the stories of the entire series. On the other hand, the game seems to be afraid and ashamed of its origin. This leads to the reduction of some game mechanics.which created something unique in this series of moves.

You play as a dragon in this tactical RPG. You simply have the form of a young boy or a young girl. Why not. During a giant battle, you will defeat the enemy, but at the same time plunge into a dream that will last as much as 1000 years. By coincidence, you wake up at the same time as the enemy from the beginning of the game, who returns for some unknown reason. The story is, frankly, nothing unique. Another typical plot about the return of a dream hero. But usually these stories also add something extra. But here in general for approx. There will be no 40 hour story. This is a badly written B-story that will leave you with nothing after you play it. To be honest, I can’t remember a single great moment, except for a great demo at the beginning of the game. If you’re looking forward to Fire Emblem Engage because the previous installments had a gripping plot, then you’re probably going to be disappointed.

In fact, the title does not even have a group of heroes in which each player would find his favorite, as it was before. Or rather, half. Jas the name Engage suggests, the game is all about interaction, i.e. connection or association. All the main characters can communicate with heroes from other times and even universes. Thus, the main character of the first part, Mart, returns, who is such a minor character of the entire series and even appeared in several DLCs in other games. From Fire Emblem Gaiden and its remake Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, here we have Celica or Byleth from the Three Kingdoms spin-off. I’m personally excited about the return of my favorite character Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates, who pulled me into the entire series. But, as I mentioned, these characters are part of the so-called United. With the help of Symbols, you can attach already announced legendary heroes to your character. They can unlock special attacks for you in combat, which can only be used for three rounds in most cases. Lin can launch two attacks in a row if the opponent wants to parry the attack. March increases dodge chance and strengthens sword attacks. But mostly I used Corrin because, among other things, she can manipulate triangular arms.

It’s not a legendary item, but withTaron combat system. It’s a classic concept “rock Paper Scissors”, only applies to weapons. The sword beats axes, spears, and spears beat swords. The same goes for spell types. But in Fates, for example, bows or daggers were included in the game. Even magic was included in the base Triangle. But now it’s like the original works where you only have three primary weapons and the rest are secondary and can’t properly deal additional damage. This makes ranged characters relatively useless. Same with mages, which are more secondary and effective mainly against some other mages. All this violates the new combat orientation Battle Monk. This trick does not use any weapons from the Triangle, only his fists. In doing so, he so strangely destroys the whole concept. At the same time, he can heal his team members. Therefore, most of the time you will just run around the battlefield with him, healing others or sending out weaker units. Think of him like any jungler in MOBA games, only with the added ability to heal others.

The simplified Arms Triangle thus throws the whole picture back a bit. Suddenly, often hopeless situations can be resolved by sending a noticeably weaker swordsman against an ax-wielding enemy. I’d rather bring back the ability to cast battlefield magic on the archer and focus on proper spellcasting and attacking rather than just the class. On the other hand, more attention is paid to tactics when moving or choosing the direction of attack. The whole map is laid out like a chessboard. Each unit can take a certain number of steps or can only use an attack at a certain distance. But, for example, when attacking from the bushes, you can attack more efficiently or dodge better. Since you will often encounter situations where stronger enemies are coming against you in the Triangle, you will need to better distribute units on the battlefield so that enemies with a sword, for example, are as far away as possible from someone armed with an axe. At the same time, you can use the Grim Knight class to destroy or overcome some obstacles.

So the combat system in the finale is not bad. Very cool turn-based action, only simplification at some points spoils the game a little, in my opinion. Hopefully the next part will expand this triangle and connect it using the environment, which I think will create a great balance.

Similarly, the possibility of creating romantic relationships with characters or deepening friendships with others may return in the next work. This too was removed in Engage due to a simpler history. The game has a lot of dialogue. Fights make up 60% of the game., and the conversations of the rest 40. But it’s more just popping dialogue bubbles. But don’t worry, most of the time they are duplicated, and there are plenty of demos in the game as well. It just suddenly loses a deeper possibility of decision-making. You can voluntarily interact with characters between missions, but you can’t deepen your relationship with them to increase joint attacks or create relationships for example. And I don’t really understand why even after beating the game. It looks like this feature was cut at the last minute. Yes, I understand that since you were born to save the world, you are more likely to win the heart of your chosen one. But I still would have liked at least the light dating sim elements that some of the older installments had. I could care more about the characters and the story itself.

Fire Emblem: Engage will enchant you with its visuals, demos and music. But if you’re a long-time fan of the series, you’ll feel that something is missing from the title. There are a few little things that beginners do not notice at all. But if you played, for example, Fates, then at first you will be surprised by the changed combat system. However, if you only play tactical turn-based combat, you will really enjoy the game.

Verdict

Fire Emblem: Engage will enchant you with its visuals, demos and music. But if you played, for example, Fates, then at first you will be surprised by the changed combat system. However, if you only play tactical turn-based combat, you will really enjoy the game.
