Zombicide is already a fairly established brand. Therefore, the creators are conducting various experiments with which they want to bring the zombie theme closer to other players who are not interested in the Middle Ages or the present. This time, the army of the dead is attacking the inhabitants of the steppe town, which makes the game somewhat reminiscent of the Evil West, with the only difference being that vampires have been forgotten here. In Zombicide: Dead or Alive you find yourself in the era of the Colts.
The Wild West and the theme of the undead running through the cities is not quite common. However, as Evil West has shown, for example, this can work relatively well. Zombicide: The Living or the Undead actually follows a very similar path. The main difference, however, is that the role of Prim is not played by vampires, but by zombies who roam the countryside and try to take everything alive with them to the grave. There are at least fourteen survivors left alive at the beginning of the entire adventure, from which six characters can be chosen to play. Scenarios are designed for 6 players, but no one bothers you to go through the entire campaign alone, and no one will get you.
Each of the characters is unique in its essence. However, they all represent one of the four playable classes. Specialists in contact combat are brawlers. Under certain circumstances, they are able to eliminate enemies for free. It also lasts longer than others, so when it comes to a one-on-one match, this is the right choice. Then we have believers. Once per turn in Zombicide: Living or Undead, members of this role have the ability to stop the advance of the undead. In addition, ordinary water for them is a potential liquidator of the undead, because they can sanctify it. There is no shortage of shooters in the spectrum of professions either. These ranged specialists can instantly fire all six bullets from their pistol, which can apparently save their lives more than once.
The last pluses in the fight against zombies are the settlers. Their main advantage is that they can search twice, and what’s worse, they have an overview of the city, since they are locals after all. All survivors progress through the gameplay, where they are initially given one option, and later on the set of alternatives expands, effectively turning ordinary people into monster hunters. You work with dice a lot while playing Zombicide: Undead because it is a tool that clearly determines whether you will succeed or fail in your endeavors.
However, don’t just roll the dice here. Each of the characters has available starting equipment. Someone carries a frying pan into battle, and someone goes into battle with a Colt or an old rifle that still hung on his belt. The base equipment of Zombicide: Undead is definitely not among the best that the creators have put at your disposal. If you want the best selection of weapons, you will have to actively search for levels and thus try your luck. Equipment cards lie in one large pile, from which you take them, so while one time you find a useful quest, another time an ordinary person, almost meaningless water, is waiting for you in the hands.
You must shoot through the hordes
Searching for hidden equipment is only one of four actions that survivors can take on their turn. They may also focus on movement, attacking the undead, or interacting with objects in the game world. For example, they can open a door or pick up a key needed to progress through the levels. The characters can initially use three actions to carry out their plans. However, over time, they have the ability to perform certain actions that are beyond their normal abilities, because as they advance to higher levels, they are given, for example, a free remote action, or another advantage that increases the chances of survival.
The development itself in Zombicide: Living or Undead is done very decently. Heroes have many ways to improve themselves. There is even an opportunity in several cases to choose which skills the character will add to his list, and which ones, on the contrary, will be left idle. And where do the dots actually come from? Well, from killing undead enemies. Their range consists of only four versions. Here we have a slow walker that is relatively easy to destroy. Just give him one hit. Wunder is much more durable, because to eliminate it you need a tool with the power of two. Runners, on the other hand, rely on the speed that can perform two actions in one movement.
The last monster that the creators put in your way in Zombicide: The Living or the Undead is the Stormtrooper. This monster with a small bowler hat on his head is unstoppable. His stamina is so great that only 3-strength items and dynamite can knock him down. But you will not find such toys on every corner, which you have to put up with. Also, you will make a lot of noise when you destroy it. It’s the noise that attracts the undead, so when you fight it, you certainly can’t complain about the lack of attention.
The plot of Zombicide: Dead or Alive revolves around a group of survivors who want to get out of the city as quickly as possible in the bowels of a steam engine for various pieces of the map. At least that’s how it looks at the beginning. I would say that this campaign is very successful and can please all fans of the western. I really like having a gatling gun that can cut down hordes very effectively. I have to say for myself that I really liked the campaign. However, its difficulty was not as high as Zombicide: The Green Horde, so I reached for the figures from the box and reinforced the zombie people with an army of undead goblins. The ability to combine individual sets is undoubtedly one of the strengths of this brand.
The new Zombicide: The Living or the Undead is a win-win
Zombicide: Alive or Undead is another variation of a great co-op game that already has its own traditions. The western theme suits the game. Zombies can strike, and when it comes to the story, it’s not bad either. Interestingly processed and new characters who are not afraid to resist the hordes with foals in their hands. Also, when you get a good group to play with and maybe adjust the difficulty by adding some other playboxes, I would go for Zombicide: Green Horde. So this is an experience for many evenings that you will remember forever thanks to some intense moments.
In conclusion, however, it should be noted that the Zombicide: Living or Undead format itself is far from being aimed at everyone. Once you understand the rules, it’s a relatively straightforward experience that, for example, might not be the best choice for fans of the much more demanding Bloodborne and its expansions, which I featured here last week. Therefore, it is very important to clarify what you are actually looking for.
