The documents of the British Competition Authority (CMA) found interesting figures regarding shooter on PlayStation. While much of the information remains private, we do learn that they are making shooters on Sony consoles. 40% of all playing time.
“Two of Activision’s main console games, CoD and Overwatch, belong to the shooter genre. Shooters make up a significant share of the publishing market, especially on consoles,” the UK authorities write in a paper that further explores the planned acquisition. Activision Blizzard from the side Microsoft“shooters accounted for (…) 40% of the world’s gaming time on PlayStation consoles.”
The edited data refers to, for example, the publisher’s profit or, more precisely, the FPS genre. However, the context shows that the data speaks in favor of a genre that is also very popular on consoles.
Mentioned Series Call of Duty is one of Sony’s main arguments against Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard. Paradoxically, PlayStation is more likely to risk losing future games if the acquisition is blocked. Microsoft pledged to publish Call of Duty multiplatform for the next ten years. But Sony refuses to sign the contract. Instead, the current licensing agreement with Activision ends next year.
