Well, this is probably quite understandable, because everything happens in a hodgepodge of zeros and ones, and who even needs to know about it … However, it is the Backfirewall_ game that allows us to look under the hood of processes into the telephone kingdom, although it is enough with its carefree and in a very comical way. And even if it doesn’t feel like it at first, Backfirewall is a great indie game that worth your attention.

Backfirewall_ is a short comedy logic adventure game in which you take on the role of an update assistant and your mission in life is to ensure a smooth transition from the old operating system to the new one, which should solve the problems caused by OS9, the previous operating system . But he has a small snag. After the update, you, as an assistant, as well as OS9 itself and a bunch of other applications that are not adapted to the new operating system, will cease to exist. Of course, you can be completely selfless and donate your little change for the good, or go on a frenzied run all over the phone with OS9. This is the voice of OS9 that will accompany you at every step and, thus, will not only be your guide through the telephone empire, but also your adviser and assistant in overcoming various obstacles. Of course, your escape will not be easy, and in addition to avoiding the antivirus tasked with bringing you back, you will have to overcome various puzzles. They will come into your hands to solve them. four cheat codes, which will allow you to remove objects, change their gravity, duplicate them, or change their color. Unfortunately, individual codes you can’t use it on everything around youbut only for predefined items, so you always somehow know what to do thanks to him, or at least you can quickly figure it out by pressing all four codes.

Although the use of codes in itself sounds like a very interesting idea, puzzleswrites the weakest pillar of the whole play. The solutions are often obvious very quickly and the first half of the game is more like a tutorial where you learn how to use the codes in practice. With a game time of about five or six hours, this is quite a lot of time. The second half, during which you already have more freedom, is much more successful, but even then you will probably not be able to get out of your head when resolving disputes. And even if you’re stuck somewhere, you can still ask for help. rubber duck, which will point you in the right direction or even tell you the full solution to the puzzle. This makes Backfirewall_ even more accessible to younger audiences, and the overall help system is excellent. Even OS9 itself will throw out a message here and there that might lead you to the right solution. But then luckily he doesn’t do it aggressively and not so often that it messes with your ability to come up with a solution on your own. Despite their simplicity, the puzzles are fun and often original. In some rooms, you’ll even have a board with what to do to overload your RAM and get ahead. In this way, you will create errors in these rooms and try to disprove the statements that are true for the moment. All in all, if you’re not looking for a big challenge from Backfirewall_, you’ll have a lot of fun. The plot flows nicely, has a great foundation and the overall concept of the phones is excellent. Humor was not spared here, OS9, as your interlocutor, sprinkles with a lot of jokes and well-aimed hints, he may be nice, but he lacks the necessary dose of sarcasm, and he performs the function of an unfortunate narrator in the middle of the story so brilliantly. In general, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the developers implemented the concept of the phone’s interior. Each application has its own consciousness and interests and lives its own life right under your nose. Each area on the phone is beautifully designed and has its own inhabitants and functions. Although as a result the world is small, but full of detailswhich will be a pleasure to discover. In addition to all this, in the background of the whole story, there will be another story about “naughty” applications that decided to fight back. They are led by Alex, a health app that is devastated by the fact that the owner never turned it on.

Even in terms of graphics, the game is really good. It gives the world exactly that fabulous charm that we know about, for example. from Pixarwhere he could easily fit into his story. The cartoonish graphical shell was more than liked by the developers. In short, the style belongs to the world, and even if you don’t find so many details here, I don’t think it will bother anyone. But where the title absolutely dominates is on the audio page. Music is nice and makes great use of the effect of the 3D environment. This will give you a great sense of rush in action passages, while in pure walking sequences you will enjoy the relaxation that the music radiates. But I can’t even praise the dubbing. Yes, there are relatively few voiced characters and actually even the main character is mute, but if the character is already voiced, then it really worked. I need to flash OS9 againjust sounded great.

Although Backfirewall_ looks like a puzzle game for kids, first impressions can be very deceiving. It’s actually a remarkably mature story about the fear of change. The story is full of well thought out humor and actually pulls the whole game forward. The puzzles themselves are not particularly special, and despite the fact that Backfirewall_ is positioned as a puzzle game, I personally would rather characterize it as epic adventure with well-written dialogue and interesting characters. Of course, the lack of Czech localization can be an obstacle for some, but with such a small development team, this is understandable. Personally, I was pleasantly surprised by the title and I enjoyed exploring the world. Backfirewall_ is a great experience that I can have with a clear conscience highly recommend.
