Bloodborne Board Game Review: Catacombs of Calich + Abandoned Cainhurst Castle

Bloodborne 2 is nowhere to be seen yet. However, this does not mean that the world of the legendary game Bloodborne cannot be looked at differently. A desktop version is also available, which has recently been enhanced with two honorary additions. How the Catacombs of Calich and the Abandoned Castle of Cainhurst are played, and what they actually bring, we will tell in the following paragraphs.

  • Number of players: 14
  • Game time: 60-90 minutes
  • Price: 2999 CZK Base game (Asmodée-Blackfire)
  • Age: 14+

Catacombs of Kalich is a powerful addition to Bloodborne.

The first add-on that we will look at in today’s review is the Catacombs of Kalichi. This expansion is primarily based on the fact that you work your way through the monsters to the final boss. In total, he adds to the game four new heroes with specific equipment, five new bosses and a bunch of enemies that are waiting for the player on twelve map tiles. But that’s not all you can count on.

The Bloodborne Catacombs of Kalicha expansion is a one-shot hunt where you have the option to choose monsters, led by a boss that awaits you in the final part of this hunting session. The composition of the monsters is mostly up to you. There is nothing stopping you from going through this extension solely with what it has to offer. However, you can always get to the monsters and hidden enemies from the base set or the Cainhurst Forsaken Castle expansion released today. Every game here starts with an Enter the Bowl element, which is the starting point for every campaign built around this format.

In this case, you can also bring monsters from the base set, but you need to have figures only from this set and somehow not mix them with figures from other game sets. The set of monsters is chosen randomly. Several times thanks to this, the children and I got really interesting and maybe even scary combinations against each other. Facing a Beast Priest, an Undead Giant, and a Beast-possessed soul is a real carnage.

One of the innovations that this add-on brings are rituals. You choose them from the very beginning, and ideally you should only choose three cards that make your life uncomfortable in some way. However, there is no stopping you from reaching for more pieces, but it should be noted that in this case your quest will probably not take too long, as each ritual card increases the overall difficulty. Among these things you can find, for example, one that gives the maximum number of lives to the characters, thereby cutting off their life force even before they actually enter the battle. Another ritual strengthens enemies and makes them much more dangerous targets. However, it should be noted that each of the Chalice Rituals can be invoked when the conditions specified by the card are met.

Another new addition that comes with Bloodborne Catacombs Kalicha are cards called Kalicha Traps. They work in such a way that as soon as you find another area, you must turn over the map marked in this way. When “Nothing” appears on it, you have run out of water. But basically you have to rely on the fact that in the next seconds some enemy will appear on the scene and rush right at you. It’s a pretty brutal carnage sometimes, but with a bit of luck, it can be dealt with.

Perhaps the most significant innovation is undoubtedly the Hunter vs. Hunter mode, in which, as the name suggests, hunters fight both monsters and other participants in the hunt. At the start, everyone present has three Appearance tokens, which disappear when they die. When the third player piece disappears, it’s all over. Monsters always disappear permanently when destroyed, but their activation is the same as in the normal game, so they always move after the hunters turn.

A great addition to Bloodborne Catacombs of Chalice gives you a unique experience that will never be the same again. Sometimes at the end you’ll have a watchdog waiting for you from the night walls of every true hunter, and other times you’ll run into an undead giant whose hooks definitely don’t sniff when hit. Another strong point of this expansion is undoubtedly that it brings PvP, something that the group at my table enjoyed in large quantities.

The story unfolds in the case of the abandoned Cainhurst Castle.

The Abandoned Castle Cainhurst expansion for the Bloodborne board game is very different from what Catacombs of Kalicha brings. There is no need to wait for new heroes in it. Instead, it brings a couple of bosses and a decent variety of monsters to haunt you. But is that all? No. The main role in this case is played by the story campaign. Although it begins with a general chapter, it subsequently branches into two lines that can be completed.

One of the narratives is The Martyr’s Legacy. This is presented through 31 story cards which are a really intense story that will absorb you the first moment you step into it. At first, you are faced with relatively simple opponents. However, as you progress, the tension and complexity increase. The second branch of the campaign, titled The Queen’s Legacy, is a bit shorter as it consists of “only” 28 maps that you play through the story from a different perspective. In both cases, this is a decent cut.

In terms of gameplay, Abandoned Castle Cainhurst doesn’t really advance the baseline version of Bloodborne. This is primarily a story addition and should be treated accordingly. Campaign lovers will definitely like it because the storytelling it offers has a twist and is definitely capable of absorbing its depth.

Catacombs of Chalice expansion and abandoned castle Cainhurst could give Bloodborne a boost

Both expansions for Bloodborne, currently translated into Czech, are truly unique and can easily enrich your experience in this world with dozens of hours of quality entertainment. This, for example, in the case of the Katacomba Kalicha add-on, will appeal to those who are looking for a really serious challenge or just want to duel with a friend. It is determined not only by you, but also by the monsters moving in the bowels of this gloomy place. I especially enjoyed this layer even with the younger players I participated in.

While Catacombs of Kalicha, in my opinion, can really advance Bloodborne and bring innovation within the gameplay (PvP), Cainhurst Abandoned Castle is primarily a format aimed at new story passages and bosses. Therefore, in practice, you will not feel the news as much as when passing through the Catacombs. But during collisions, you can count on interesting juices, moving through rather boring parts of the map. If you are thinking about which expansion to choose, Catacombs of Kalicha is the best alternative. But if you’re a hardcore fan and want to cut down on the waiting time for Bloodborne 2, I wouldn’t be afraid to pick both. That’s because it’s hardcore entertainment that, like a video game, can absorb both high difficulty and dense atmosphere.
