Two years ago, Nvidia released a mobile version of the GeForce RTX 3080, followed by the RTX 3080 Ti a year later, and this year it was replaced by the GeForce RTX 4080. It has always been the best you can find in a laptop. However, we will not talk about the 1980s series here. The green team came up with the ultimate high-end GeForce RTX 4090. How’s Nvidia’s new flagship?

The GeForce RTX 4090 for laptops offers 9728 CUDA cores, which is a huge jump from the 7424 cores of the GeForce RTX 4080. The video memory is 16GB GDDR6 and the bus width has been increased from 192 bits to 256 bits. TDP varies from 80W to 150W, the cooling power mainly depends here.

New from the Nvidia stable has been independently tested by colleagues from PCTuning.cz on Asus’ ROG Strix SCAR 18 laptop. In addition to the top-end GeForce RTX 4090 graphics, the top machine also received the best from Intel, the Core i9-13980HX processor with 32 threads, hybrid architecture and a frequency of up to 5.6 GHz. The total TDP for the GPU is 175W, the CPU is claimed to be up to 65W, and the power supply has a power of 330W. The specification is complemented by 64 GB of DDR5 RAM at 4800 MHz. You can install up to two NVMe drives.

To cool this system, Asus applied liquid metal to the CPU and graphics, allowing for better heat dissipation through heatpipes and three fans. All performance is then unlocked with the MUX switch, allowing users to bypass integrated graphics. So you get the real maximum from the installed GeForce RTX 4090.

However, what is a slot machine without a good display. Asus calls the best Nebula HDR display panels and we can find one of them here. It has QHD resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, and mini LED backlight with Dolby Vision HDR support. This is one of the best laptop monitors you can buy right now.

Before gaming tests, we will first look at rendering, computing and encoding performance. Here you can see a huge shift from the RTX 3080 Ti laptop. We emphasize that the number of CUDA cores has increased by 38%, but the resulting performance is often 100% higher.

Now about playtests. In the Time Spy test, the laptop with GeForce RTX 4090 is far ahead of all competitors. In Read Dead Redemption 2 at Full HD, you will get more than 30 FPS more than in the case of any laptop from the previous generation. The shift can also be seen in Cyberpunk 2077. On average, the performance gain is around 25%. And we’re not even talking about DLSS 3, a new version of DLSS exclusive to RTX 40 series cards.

At native QHD resolution, enabling DLSS already makes sense. Here the differences between the current generation with DLSS 3 and last year with DLSS 2 are truly huge. Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 112fps instead of 39fps. You can enjoy Formula 1 at 210 fps and The Witcher at 101 fps.

Thanks to DLSS 3, you get twice the frames per second. Of course, the technology is not implemented in all games. However, where you can find it, it works great. Fortunately, weaker models from the RTX 40 series will also offer intelligent image generation, which will also be more affordable.

In recent years, the performance gain of gaming laptops has been around 15% across generations. There are positive changes this year, even without DLSS you will get a 25% improvement. In the case of using DLSS 3, the gain is much higher.

This trend is sure to repeat itself in the lower RTX 40-series graphics laptops, as Asus won’t be selling many pieces of game guns with a breakneck 98k crowns price tag. It is an obvious choice for the most demanding. Other gamers should wait for the GeForce RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 laptops. They will have a much better price with very similar performance gains. But if you’re hungry for the best, there’s no reason to delay. There simply won’t be a more powerful laptop on the market.
