Our detailed review of the PlayStation VR2 hardware can be found here.
Flagship: Horizon Call of the Mountain
This is the main (new) game that Sony/PlayStation prepared just in time for the launch of their new platform as a showcase for performance, control and interaction. Most new PlayStation VR2 owners will immediately receive this game bundled with the headset. Thus, we have already covered this game in a detailed review, so let’s just briefly remind you that you will definitely be amazed by the beautiful graphics, the majesty of the giant robot dinosaurs passing by you is a great, great experience. But be prepared for the fact that the core of the gameplay is mainly climbing activities, led by rock climbing with bare hands and all sorts of shooting at anchors and ropes. So the game will carefully check your physique.
Our top tip: Kayak VR Mirage
The surprise winner of the PlayStation VR2 games we’ve tested so far is this seemingly inconspicuous “little” game where you do just one thing: paddle a kayak in beautiful nature. However, the seemingly simple concept with logically “limited” movement allowed the creators to process the world around them with photorealistic textures and effects that are completely impossible to demonstrate in screenshots or videos (literally, for example, the night mode is processed so brilliantly that there is practically nothing on the screenshots). you can see, although the helmet has just the right night darkness, when you “look around” and make out the darkened world around you – a very impressive effect that is difficult to describe). Although the environments are few, they are quite diverse (from glaciers to rocky cliffs and deep jungles) and incredibly beautiful. You can enjoy them both in a physically demanding online race against other online players, and in silence during a completely calm free ride. This is probably the most beautiful game we’ve ever seen in any VR headset.
Big Three #1: Resident Evil 8
We cannot offer any impressions yet, unfortunately the VR patch for the game was not activated even a few hours before the new headset went on sale. But for many fans of the VR platform, this is the most anticipated of the announced games. The seventh Resident Evil was by a wide margin the best “hardcore” game for the last generation of PlayStation VR, and you can expect the eight on the second generation of VR to do the same.
Big Three #2: Gran Turismo 7
One of the biggest racing games of our time, with great care and love for motorsport on the part of the creators, this is a real joy for all fans. But experiencing it in virtual reality is a whole new level of “being pulled into your place.” It’s hard to explain how exciting it is to turn your head to look “with your own eyes” in the rearview mirror from one side or another, or how dizzy it is when you pass an opponent and are afraid that he will crash into you. To all this, seemingly small details, for example, when the sun peeks out from behind the clouds and its rays smoothly pass through the interior of your car at a turn under the bridge, add an additional portion of impressions. In short, with VR2, this game will engulf you more than ever before. But be aware that the VR display only applies to the race itself, not to menu screens or video replays (these are what you watch in 2D in a helmet-mounted movie screen).
Big Three #3: No Man’s Sky
We cannot offer any impressions yet, unfortunately the VR patch for the game was not activated even a few hours before the new headset went on sale. However, over the years of fixing new features and improvements, the game has evolved into a truly gigantic, beautiful and diverse universe, full of planets to explore and ways to enjoy this activity alone or with friends. If you’ve been following the development of the game with interest, but without your own involvement, the addition of a VR mode might finally make you want to fly there and check out all the new stuff. It will probably be a great experience to see these magical, colorful worlds in this universe “with your own eyes.”
Moss and Moss: Book Set II
It seems to be invisible, but at the same time one of the most beautiful and fun games for VR. Some players may think that if you don’t use the helmet to see “with your own eyes” the character you control, the presence effect will be insufficient. But this is a false assumption. Here you look from above or sideways at the fabulous scenery through which (direct control from the controller) you make a brave mouse, but the feeling of “being there” is much stronger than in any FPS game. An extremely thorough study of the environment, characters, mechanics and plot of the game also plays a big role in this. This is a beautiful, touching fairy tale and creative platformer. The two separate games can be purchased separately, but together they will cost you more.
Rez Infinite
Rez is a game that also cannot be judged or understood well enough from screenshots or videos. His graphics are downright sketchy and look ugly, poor. But when played with a helmet, these geometric objects take on an almost tangible depth, height, and “weight”, so when an enemy ship passes by you, you experience a really strong feeling. Just like you get the impression that giant structures, pyramids and so on are floating around you. It’s essentially an arcade shooter, but the spatial control gives it a unique challenge. In any case, the gameplay here comes first. If you liked the original Tron movie, you’ll love this game too.
Tetris effect: connected
Tetris Effect is one of those games that showcase the quality of your latest 4K TV even in 2D. Although the center of the screen is a “traditional” playing surface with simple dice, it is surrounded by beautiful graphic backgrounds that pulsate and come to life with your every move, perfectly in time with the very carefully chosen background songs. This exhilarating experience is taken to a new level in virtual reality, where the shock waves after completing the individual lines of the puzzle will also shake tactile vibrations in the headset itself, and glowing whales swim in the space around you. Beautiful relaxation.
Tamper
“Rhythmic Violence” is the description of this game, and if you’ve already played it without a VR helmet, then you know that this is exactly what the game really is – like a steel scarab, you race along steel rails through the darkness to dodge . and dodge obstacles on the rails, which gives rise to characteristic rhythmic effects that fit into the dark, pulsating music. At the end of the rail, of course, the real boss awaits. Playing in virtual reality adds an extra layer of menace and grandeur to this game, and its dynamics will make you sit back on the couch even though you obviously don’t need to (it’s all about pressing the right buttons). Very good entertainment for lovers of rhythm action.
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge – Expanded Edition
If you’re a dedicated Star Wars fan, then this game could be the best starter game for PlayStation VR2. The emphasis on story and thoughtful graphics will really make you feel like you’re on board one of the astronauts from these films in many places. When you meet aliens of all shapes and sizes in the dining room, it will seem to you that you are in a dream. At the same time, you will find a lot of action and shooting from all kinds of blasters. You just have to be a little patient with the sometimes too long dialogues and the lack of a more rewarding tutorial causing a few minor crashes early in the game.
Jurassic world aftermath collection
Like the previous game, if you’re a fan of movie illustrations, this part is a must. Don’t be fooled by the seemingly “simple” comic book-style graphics, this is a very rich and atmospheric game that will really make you feel like you’re in Jurassic Park – as the T-Rex rumbles past, the tactile sensations will shake your hands and head. The creators spared nothing, among the actors you will hear Laura Bailey or Jeff Goldblum, and of course there are iconic melodies from the films. In addition, the genre of the game is very close to survival horror, which should also be of interest to fans of the Resident Evil series, eager for the revival of the Dino Crisis series. When I played Jurassic Park in 2D on an 8-bit NES back in 1993, I really didn’t think that one day I’d be hiding in a closet while a velociraptor prowled “right before my eyes.” Again, this game is a great experience for fans.
