“Therefore, I categorically reject it. What the hell is a PlayStation where I have a keyboard, why the hell am I supposed to play something like that and what the hell am I supposed to do. No, I don’t care that I said I would do it, I want to go home, leave me alone!”
So I had about the same feelings when on me forgotten little left to review. Okay, “left” isn’t the best word, I was basically just asking myself and praying that I could play the game on PC. Unlike the main character Freya but I am no longer a vain resentful teenager, and I met the challenge like a man. And I’m glad about it. Not only have I learned important life skills like squeezing L3 and R3But something happened to me that I didn’t expect. I actually really liked the game, full of grind, unpleasant characters and the same assets. However, it is quite clear to me that I will be almost alone in this. But don’t worry, I’ll explain why!
FROM NEW YORK TO THE VERGE OF FANTASY
Forspoken actually starts quite high. You will meet the already mentioned main character named Frey Holland, a typical flabby teenager who has problems with the law and literally makes his way through life alone. You pick her up when she is put on trial, luckily she escapes and while she looks forward to how her life will finally change, her wish will come true down to the last detail. Coincidence, or maybe fate leads her to a mysterious talking bracelet and through a magical portal she enters a magical kingdom. Atiawhere he understands absolutely nothing and no one.
“Nobody understands me! I want my cat Homer. Why the hell are you taking me to jail?! Relax guys!
So the beginning of the game is tight, nothing about it. It has nothing to do with the rest of the game, but works great as an addition to the story. What is lacking, however, is the gameplay itself. The prologue in New York is not related to the game loop at all and is actually more correct. many rollerswhich abruptly interrupts gameplay and alternately gives you the game locks freedom to control the camera. However, the dragon fight tutorial tips the scales a bit, and the introduction itself is actually quite good. However, once it’s all over and you’re given some leeway in moving around the empire’s capital, problems start to mount. Despite the grandeur of the architecture, you will realize that the city is actually quite empty, including its inhabitants. Everything looks as empty as in games from From software, just with a lot of people doing nothing. The rare multi-character dialogue that the game has to offer doesn’t have much depth either, and even protagonist Frey starts to get on many people’s nerves.
Unfortunately, the developers of the game didn’t have a stopwatch like mine. Frey is annoyingly stubborn from the very beginning and almost to the very end. I didn’t mind it myself, on the contrary, I rated it as a pretty accurate depiction of teenagers, but most players, as you can see from other reviewers, won’t like it.
THE REAL BEGINNING
The city gates open and in about two hours you’ll find out what the game is really about. I would describe Forspoken as an action-adventure game with a landscape sailing simulator. Thanks to the talking bracelet, the protagonist gains access to magical abilities and turns out to be the only one who is resistant to the infection that has hit the whole world. Although Frey simply wants to return home, the player soon realizes that he will remain here until the realm is saved. Atia’s problems are clearly related to the so-called matriarchy. Tantthose. women who used to lead the inhabitants to prosperity with their strength, wisdom and supernatural abilities, but then they were raked into one.
Your main task will be to find individual Tanta, pacify them and thereby expand your own magical abilities. These parts of the story are very successful, but the problem, unfortunately, is what separates them. During your journey, you will travel through a landscape full of monsters, and along the way, you will discover a predetermined and unchanged carousel of the same points of interest until the end of the game. Specifically, it’s a pond where you get a new spell. Homestead for pilgrims with a bed. About three types of obelisks. Then treasure with a logic puzzle. Tower with treasures and enemies. Village with treasures and enemies. Fortress with treasures and enemies. A dungeon entrance that looks like it came out of a procedural generator pen with three bursts of enemies and treasure.
Enough, I can’t take another treasure. Luckily I don’t have to, it’s basically a complete list. The individual locations then use exactly the same models and layout, and the only difference is whether you find a herb, a healing pack, an ore, or some old sledgehammer in the location.
CZECH?
In order not to be so negative, I will focus on Leyster. You will learn the history of the whole country and its insane rulers mainly from the descriptions in the encyclopedia. This style of storytelling is lackluster to say the least, but it certainly isn’t boring to read. I really enjoyed reading about how the world works, and although the game tells you hesitantly at the very end, just to be sure, I really enjoyed it. Partly due to the fact that you can meet a strange Czech track. When I first saw this in game defense area And Exercise areaI thought it was probably some remnant of an awkward Czech localization thrown out during development. Fort Blood I thought it was probably a joke and slapped my forehead when I realized it was Tanta Force really comes from strength Tanta is right again from a real person.
In the credits of the game, I searched in vain among the writers for the name of the Czech joker, but did not notice. Everything points to the fact that when the developers were looking for a very unconventional fantasy-sounding language, Czech was the right choice for them.
The only pity is that the Czech remains are actually perhaps the most interesting thing in a more detailed examination of the world. The resources you find in treasures have relatively little effect on the game in the endgame, the same goes for items. You can change cloaks and necklaces for Frey, but I didn’t feel their effect during the game. You can also use magic nail painting, which is similar in effectiveness, but at least it’s really something new. What really affects your progress in the game is the magic you can unlock as you progress through the game. The whole world is covered with glowing mana balls, which you then exchange for spells. While grinding them is very annoying, it’s also beneficial because you really get to know how your spells get stronger and I liked Forspoken the most.
I will try to explain it to you. It is clear to me that many first-class players will break their stick just because of the confusing hodgepodge of spells. And there are good reasons for this. However, I was lucky enough to unlock everything with a very specific tactic, which allowed me to get to know the game from the best side.
PURPLE, RED, BLUE AND GREEN
In the beginning you are gifted with the so-called purple magic, which can be described as earthly magic. Individual abilities are then always divided by either attack type on the right trigger or support type on the left. Help L1 and R1 you can select a specific spell like L2 and R2 then you send them. I suspected that individual abilities might soon become too much for me, and that I didn’t want to choose between the seven abilities on the wheel. So I saved up my mana and invested mostly in those spells that could later be upgraded to the next level. This did mean a lot of time for repetitive grinding, but as a result, I only had a few spells, but very powerful ones, that I could control very well. It paid off for me, especially after you found out that there are three other types in the game besides purple magic. red magic with strong fire melee attacks, bluewhich helps keep enemies away from each other with water, and green with lightning area attacks and illusions. Each magic has a huge number of abilities. Although you can freely switch between different types of spells on the gamepad, I can recommend one more thing. Because each magic has one spell, thanks to which you can quickly switch to it with a bonus effect. Thanks to this, you will then be able to chain your attacks, jump at lightning speed, and in general, next to you, even Dumbledore will look like a fairground magician.
The problem is that this is perhaps the only way to enjoy the game. Forgotten is not like ancient ring or Witcher. It makes no sense to look for feints on enemies, stopping at each stone and looking for unhidden secrets. Forspoken is the speed, both in the combat system and when moving around the map. You will get the most pleasure when the gas pedal is stuck in the floor, and the game cannot explain it to you properly.
I can really understand why the game gets very mixed reviews from three out of ten to nine. It really depends on how you choose to play. Forspoken has a bloated start and end, but it’s up to you. If you only do the basic tasks, you will finish them in about twelve hours. However, it took me twenty-seven, and although it sometimes lingered like the stink of socks, I gladly turned off the brain during grinding, and the reward was a brutal intoxication with the powers of the main character. My only regret is that when I tried the demo on PC after playing the game, I realized how much time I had wasted struggling with console controls.
MAIN SPEED MODE
The game has become noticeably more enjoyable and smoother on a powerful computer. I would probably recommend turning off the quality mode in the PlayStation settings purely for technical reasons. The game is really as good as it is on PC, but sixty frames per second is really needed here. While the game has an interesting color palette and some really nice views, it’s not worth the jerky moves. Instead of studying the models in detail, whether they are monsters, people or environments, it is better to spend time listening, because the musical accompaniment is actually very good.
We are approaching the final. I have the honor to close with my review the old way of rating and, perhaps, for the last time, wander in my head about what number the game actually deserves. So, let’s summarize.
Forspoken is a bold name. Team Luminous production ventured into some very dangerous waters trying to sell an oriental-style game to a western audience. This discrepancy is then seen in almost every aspect of the game. The developers obviously did not have enough attention to detail so that the game could be considered with a clear conscience a three-star product costing about seventy or eighty dollars. However, it definitely has a lot to offer, and if you tune into the game mechanics well, it will bring you a lot of fun. So I can honestly recommend the PlayStation 5 version only five points out of ten, but I admit that I grind my teeth a lot. I myself liked the game, and if you are going to play on a platform that you are familiar with, like the pace of the game, and God forbid you like cats, which you will find in the game abound, do not be shy. add two more points to the recommendation.
Verdict
Forspoken is a game with amazing potential, but it suffers from a lot of problems. To unlock its full potential, you need to get a feel for the pace of the game and start enjoying the wonderful feeling of speed, but if you play slowly, you will soon break the stick for the game.
