Board game review My first impenetrable castle

Board games adapt formats known from video games in various ways. Some focus on challenging gameplay, while others clearly lack the complexity that the title is all about. I have long considered myself a big fan of the tower defense genre, so I could not refuse the opportunity to jump into the My First Impregnable Castle board, which I tested on several age groups (4, 6 and 12). The following lines will tell you how she has proven herself.

  • Number of players: 14
  • Game time: 20 minutes
  • Price: 500 crowns (Asmodee-Blackfire)
  • Age: 4+

The Green Horde knows no mercy in “My First Impossible Castle”

The Greenskins are a stubborn group that is definitely not one to spare their fallen enemies. In some worlds, this race is perceived as openly aggressive, in others it has already transformed into something that is no longer subject to racial stereotypes about evil goblins and good people who have plagued iconic MMORPGs for many years. However, everywhere its representatives are tough warriors, whose desire to fight clearly flows through their veins. Definitely inspired by Orcs Must Die!, My First Impregnable Castle is a board game that challenges you to face a raging green sea. That is, of course, if you don’t want to lose your castle.

In front of you is a playground with a starting and also an ending position, where there are walls protecting your fortifications. And exactly at the end the horde should never get. Up to four heroes can face her using only cards. Because it’s essentially a bit of an educational game, you won’t find volleys of arrows, magic balls, or cards symbolizing the trip. Nothing like this! Instead, there are basic geometric shapes in different colors, which can also be found on the side of the path leading to your castle. Each player has one card at the start, after which they draw. You can get a universal version that protects all the colors of a certain shape, a color that covers all shapes, or, conversely, a detail that is effective only for a well-defined situation.

The horde keeps rolling forward after each player’s turn, so if you’re unlucky you can just watch the goblins race towards your mansion. So it’s not. The player not only has to look sad during their turn, but also has the option to ask their colleague, who has the option to provide a card and thereby slow down progress. The cooperative aspect is really strong here, and during the game I often had the opportunity to see how individual players learned to cooperate better and subsequently, thanks to their teamwork, win in often seemingly hopeless situations.

Board Game Review My First Impregnable Castle My First Impregnable Castle 3

At first glance, it may not seem like it, but the goblins in My First Unassailable Castle are pretty cool creatures. In addition to the completely ordinary ones, who do not have special abilities, you can also meet specialists who you need to focus on. For example, such a leader not only moves his colleagues, but also adds another monster to the board, ready to wreak havoc. More game options. You can try solo, a little easier by removing special skills, or vice versa complicate it so that instead of three monsters at the start there are four monsters, and you have only one attempt. There are relatively many variations.

Cooperation is a must in My First Impregnable Castle

My first impregnable castle is a simple board game that is basically not played on anything. You have this attacking horde that can only be dealt with in the final if you cooperate. While younger players have the opportunity to cooperate more and somehow not think about making themselves visible, older participants already have a certain degree of desire to assert themselves. Of course, this leads to unpleasant situations and more than one loss. However, the basic idea of this work is very simple, so with the right team you can create a goblin army not only in the elementary version, but also in various modifications that sometimes reduce and sometimes increase complexity.

For myself, I could probably imagine a bigger game plan with a wider range of tactical possibilities. The one in My first impenetrable castle seems very small to me. On the other hand, it should be noted that its smaller range always keeps up the pace at high speeds, no matter how big a group you play. Plus, of course, you have to work with an age group that, at least in the games I’ve played, is completely sized. Considering the contents of the box, the price tag, without reaching some dizzying heights, seems relatively easy to defend.
