Enemy design and gameplay demo for Resident Evil 4 Remake

Game Informer magazine has published the first of a series of exclusive videos dedicated to the upcoming remake of the fourth Resident Evil. This is an interview with Art Director Hirofumi Nakaoka, which is also updated with brand new gameplay footage, especially from the famous saloon fight. However, the main theme was the design of the enemies.

The main task was to preserve their variability and uniqueness. Nakaoka notably spears a chainsaw-wielding villager known as Dr. White. Salvador. It is said that he caused a lot of problems for the developers, but they realized that his charm did not lie in some special appearance of the monster. He is an “ordinary” villager, only with a bag on his head. So for the most part they kept the look and feel of the original game and benefited from the graphical improvements.

The other enemy that Nakaoka mentions is not in the original at all and wasn’t even planned for the remake. The idea was born towards the end of development, when the developers, after beating the game, began to say that in some passages a stronger opponent would come up. But they didn’t want to make another one that looks like an ordinary person, on the contrary, they tried to use the Los Iluminados motif more as a cult. A new enemy whose main weapon is a big hammer, so he wears the head of a dead cow.

In addition to the video, an article about the president’s daughter Ashley Graham, whom Leon intends to save, also provided new information. From the original, we remember her as a rather annoying and not very useful character, which is exactly what should be changed in the remake. She has become more serious, reacts better to certain situations, can climb stairs (Leon no longer needs to catch her) and will help us get to otherwise inaccessible rooms.

On the other hand, we don’t have the ability to protect Ashley. Pressing the right stick on the gamepad only regulates how far it will be from us. She doesn’t have a health bar, but if she takes too much damage during a fight, she falls to the ground and Leon has to revive her. As in the original, enemies can try to kidnap her.

According to the developers, they originally wanted to further show the human side of both characters and deepen their bond. Leon could take Ashley’s hand, but to the other people on the team it seemed like an indication of a closer relationship, which wasn’t the intention at all, so it didn’t make it into the game in the end.

Resident Evil 4 Remake releases March 24 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
