Like many of you, we at the editorial team have spent the weekend with the return of the first Dead Space in a much-improved remake. It’s not a very long game, so you can easily finish it in a weekend. Now what? Again and on a higher difficulty? Unlock a secret alternate ending in New Game Plus? What about a direct continuation of the story in the second part of the series?
Dead Space 2 was released in 2011 (three years after the first part) and became a very successful sequel with a significantly larger budget. It was one of the very first games that could play almost the entire campaign with almost no editing (with smooth camera transitions between scenes, as God of War became famous many years later). First of all, the game had even more action, interesting weapons and enemies… but it also retained an honest horror atmosphere, which is completely unforgettable, especially in some legendary passage without any shooting at all. At the same time, the story also gained depth and momentum – just a perfect second part in every way, which is often compared to the second sequel to the movie “Alien”.
Often compared to the second sequel to Alien.
Of course, you can safely play the second part on a PC, but what about the current consoles? Unfortunately, PlayStation 5 owners are probably out of luck, you won’t find the game on the PlayStation Store at all. However, on the current Xbox (Series X or S), the situation is significantly different. Not only can you find the second (and third) installment in the series, including all DLC, but it’s also “free” as part of the EA Play service, bundled with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. But it’s still not the best. The best part is how vastly improved the version of the game available on this platform is with enhanced Xbox backwards compatibility features:
Although it is a game emulated from an old 3rd generation console (Xbox 360), the Xbox series hardware and software improvements give it a whole new life with three key features:
Summary
The simplest, but also very nice improvement is the faster loading of data and the ability to immediately return to the game at any time (the console remembers the exact state of the game, even if you jump to play something else).
Upscaling up to 4K
If you were worried about the low resolution video from the game at the beginning of the article, you don’t need to worry about this issue on the Xbox Series. The console will convert the game to 4K (Xbox Series X) or 1440p (Xbox Series S).
Frame rate boost
Thanks to the more powerful performance of the new console, the game will run absolutely smoothly at 60 frames per second. At the time, you couldn’t play Dead Space 2 in that amazingly fluid fashion on the original consoles.
Auto HDR
This improvement is the most difficult to explain, but at the same time it is the most impressive. Just try looking at the attached screenshots from my gameplay. Advanced Contrasting Techniques lighting and colorsapplied to the original game often makes it look like modern games (and their more advanced special or lighting effects). This feature (on an HDR-enabled TV or monitor) is the main reason Dead Space 2 looks so good on the Xbox Series, you won’t mind taking a “step back” after the remake.
