So this is a surprise. Thunderful does come out with another game from the excellent SteamWorld series, but it’s not the SteamWorld Headhunter third-person co-op adventure we were teased back in November 2021. SteamWorld Build Strategy, which will be released later this year for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. You can also find it on Steam demo version.
But don’t run away just yet. SteamWorld Build looks interesting on paper. In SteamWorld Dig 1 and 2, you played as a worker robot that searched underground for treasures and ancient technology so that the city above could grow and develop. Changes were made in your absence, which gradually began to annoy the players. Now the developers are combining these two worlds, and in SteamWorld Build you can control the growing mining town above by giving orders to your worker robotsdig a mine, look for ancient technologies and natural resources.
The game is described as a mixture of Anno and Dungeon Keeper, but personally I would add SimCity and Tower Defense to this mixture, because you have to deal with a variety of enemies lurking below the surface. The deeper you dig, the harder it must be. And you will have to dig, your main task is to find various fragments of ancient technology, which is the key to salvation from impending doom. Some say they are rockets to escape into space.
You must do it take care of your residentsproviding them with food as well as entertainment. Just remember that the more your city grows, the more difficult it will be to meet the needs of its inhabitants. Luckily there will be a choice three difficulty levelsso newcomers to strategizing and veterans alike must find their way.
SteamWorld Build is created simultaneously for PC and consoles and, according to the developers, will work with both the mouse and keyboard, and with the gamepad. In addition to this project, Thunderful is working on four more SteamWorld games. The company’s earlier financial report talked about a mobile puzzle and turn-based strategy game with elements of tactics and action.
