Canadian development studio Skybox Laboratorieswhich made a name for itself by supporting the development of Halo: Infinite and Minecraft, was bought by a Chinese company NetEase games. The amount was not disclosed.
SkyBox was founded in 2011 and is based in Burnaby, British Columbia. During this time, two games were created here: in 2016, the game TASTEE: Lethal Tactics, and in 2019, Stela.
“Over the past ten years, we have had the pleasure of working on such popular games as Halo Infinite, Minecraft and Fallout 76,” — SkyBox co-founder Shyang Kong recalled his collaboration with Xbox Game Studios.
“We remain committed to expanding our footprint in Canada, supporting our current and future partners, and co-creating more AAA games for some of the biggest gaming studios around the world.”
“We have built a team of talented, passionate and creative people, and by joining NetEase Games, we will also be able to accelerate our plans for new creative possibilities and leverage access to first-class operational resources and the full range of NetEase services to expand faster in Canada.” Kong added.
The Chinese tech giant previously bought Grasshopper production (No more heroes) and quantum dream (Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human). He joined NetEase Games last year. Toshihiro Nagoshithe creator of Yakuza founded Nagoshi Studio and wants to make high quality games for consoles first.
