We’re lucky, we’ve literally reached the limit of next-gen game control. We were invited to Sony offices to try it out for ourselves. Dual touch edge. A refined version of the controller for the PlayStation 5 console. It was announced some time ago and will not be released until the end of next month. But because the shooting was difficult and we couldn’t really commit ourselves to it as we imagined, since it wasn’t given to us directly, We decided to at least briefly present our impressions to you. But even that should give you an idea of what the new and three times more expensive version of the driver can actually handle, so let’s get down to business.
At first glance, we noticed the changed color scheme. Whereas the original controller only had red at the bottom with the levers, back buttons and trigger, on the Edge, the combination of black and white is closer to half. The touchpad is also black, which has been retextured with PlayStation-specific shapes (wheel, square, cross, and triangle), as well as buttons on the right and a D-pad on the left, and the back around the USB-C. connector (which is now knitted) and smooth back. However, the area around the levers at the bottom, which was black on the original controller, also received some improvement. Now it is not matte, but a little shiny. The rear triggers also received a new texture; like the touchpad, they have been enriched with PS shapes.
Speaking of forms, the design of the entire controller changes slightly. From the point of view of dimensions, and therefore in the case of ergonomics, we are talking about the same thing. You will only notice the biggest difference at the back. The touchpad has been slightly lengthened, the plastic with LEDs goes straight down and the entire area around the cable has changed. This is mainly due to one of the controller’s new features – a lockable cable. You can insert a USB-C cable into a piece of plastic, the end of the cable itself comes out and you connect it in the classic way, and the plastic itself is securely fixed to the controller thanks to small holes next to the connector. connector. So you don’t have to worry about pulling or damaging the cable and breaking it. This is pretty cool stuff.
One of the other most notable features of the DualSense Edge is the two extra holes on the sides of the back panel. Two types of buttons can be connected to them. Or oars that reach half the space that you hold with your palms; or those little “half-buttons” that you can reach with your middle finger. The advantage of these buttons is that you can map other existing buttons to them. So the practical use of this feature is very individual, but we can imagine that there might be a few games that would benefit from it. Specifically for quickly pressing the buttons on the front panel without taking your thumbs off the levers.
At the PlayStation offices, we specifically tested the rear stick function, for example, when playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, and for example running or shooting at close range, i.e. functions normally provided by the R3 and L3 buttons have been placed more sensibly on the back of the controller. It was the same in God of War Ragnarok, when rear sticks replaced dodge and ax summoning. It is the great variability in the field of settings that allows the player to find the most intuitive solution.
But more can be installed. Next to the triggers, you will notice a slider with three steps. This determines how hard you should and can pull the trigger, and thus sets up their so-called “dead zones” (i.e. places where they no longer respond to being pulled). In this way, you can reduce the number of clicks on them, for example, to start a car or start shooting, without losing their adaptability (their reaction). This can be useful for longer, more intense games or if you want to have more control over something. In our case, the feature paid off again when playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. When you reduce the “dead zone” on the trigger used for aiming to the lowest level, aiming will take much less time, and therefore you can very easily gain a significant advantage over your opponent.
This time you can also set the dead zones and then the sensitivity of the levers as such. With them, you can even change rubber caps if you prefer a different texture, or even entire modules. They can be replaced, especially if your lever starts to drift. Instead of buying the entire controller, simply replace the stick module at a much more affordable price. Not only did the change in texture and height of the joystick evoke nostalgia, since these are the kind of joysticks we may have been used to since the days of older consoles, the taller grip represents a better position for snipers, such as in online shooters. .

But the feature that most caught our attention at first sight, There are two additional buttons on the bottom edge of the controller below the sticks. These are the so-called FN keys, with which you can do some software things without going into the menu unnecessarily. For example, changing pre-prepared profiles – and therefore vibration settings or those very levers – or, perhaps, changing the volume of headphones, including adjusting the volume of voice chat and the game itself – and this is a very useful feature. In the console itself, a new menu will become available to you, in which you can remap individual buttons and even adjust the activation curves of individual levers, depending on whether you need fast or precise reactions. As a player with an assault rifle or submachine gun, you will prefer quick reactions in the movement zone, but as a sniper, you will appreciate when the reaction of the stick is more accurate.
You get all parts of the driver in a portable case so you don’t miss anything. What you really don’t want. As we already mentioned, the price of the controller is about three times the price of the console itself. So if you are interested in these features, prepare about six thousand crowns in your wallet.
But from first impressions, we can conclude that although this is a premium controller, which is definitely not for everyone, he does what he has to do very well and you can hardly imagine how even such small changes will work for you in practice.
