Microsoft’s attempt to acquire Activision has been a thorn in rival Sony’s side for some time now, so they are trying various ways to prevent this major acquisition. According to Microsoft President Brad Smith, this effort is unjustified, as, in his opinion, and the objections of the Federal Trade Commission, which argues that the acquisition could harm economic competition, are incorrect. As he presented at the shareholder meeting, which was reported by the Bloomberg server, Sony has a long-term dominant position in the gaming market. While the Xbox only has 59 exclusives, the PlayStation has 286.

Smith himself commented: “Indeed, the FTC case is based on a market it has identified, which it says has two companies and two products: the Sony PlayStation and the Microsoft Xbox. If you look at the global market, Sony will have 70% of that market and we have 30%. So the first thing the judge will have to decide is whether the FTC lawsuit is a case that will promote competition, or is it really a case that will protect the biggest competitor from competition instead.

According to Microsoft, the purchase of Activision is justified due to Microsoft's excess of exclusives for PS Halo Infinite.

However, the Federal Trade Commission is not the only body that does not like the upcoming acquisition. The other one in play is the European Commission or the UK Competition and Markets Authority. However, it’s true that there are a lot of exclusives on PlayStation. However, none of them is as strong as the Call of Duty brand, which is the biggest bone of contention.

According to Microsoft, the purchase of Activision is justified due to the excess of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 exclusives for PS.
