Prey can become a hunter at any time in Pac-Man
Pac-Man is a hero who is not easy at all. The ghosts won’t let him eat in peace, so he’ll have to deal with them before they can eliminate him. That’s what the main idea of the name PAC-MAN is: a board game that gives four players the opportunity to fight a man who saves his life. How far the owner of Pac-Man moves within his movement is determined by three dice. Sometimes he wishes you well, and sometimes he turns away from you. For example, if only one trefoil caught on the whole clover. It’s a fight for your life, but you can do it your way thanks to the ability to determine the direction that the yellow michuda will go at any given moment, which ethereal opponents cannot.
Ghosts don’t have bones. Like Sonic and Friends, their mobility is determined by the cards their owners draw at the start of their turn. Then they apply the resulting value in a certain direction. However, unlike Pac-Man, they have no way to return to the squares they came from. Their main task is to eliminate the yellow eater before he manages to collect all the yellow pegs, for which he will receive a good score in points.
Basically, it’s a hunt that Pac-Man can partially end by activating a power token that turns prey into a hunter on three dice rolls, able to simply eat ghosts and gain the points needed to win. You get points not only for eliminating and collecting pins, but also for eating fruits that appear gradually. With ghosts, it is absolutely necessary to think tactically, because once you give up strategy and cooperation, you have almost no chance of winning.
The shape of the card is more or less well defined in Pac-Man. Of course, it would be possible to create new locations by changing parts, but the problem is that the labyrinth is linear and practically unchanged, so you have to be content with one space with Pac-Man and a bunch of ghosts running through it. For myself, I have to say that this is a bit of a shame, because the ability to transform the battlefield can help a lot in general, in addition, this format works without much problems in other places and increases replay value. To some extent it is, but the battlefield looks relatively fast, not only in terms of visual design, but also in terms of tactical capabilities.
A wave of nostalgia helps to ignore evil
I have tested PAC-MAN with several groups of players. However, none of them was able to strike up a very warm relationship with her. On the other hand. Although it was a target group, it didn’t last very long with the game, preferring to go back to Marvel Splendor, Small World of Warcraft, or one of the other games available to it. The main problem for young players was, apparently, that this thing, despite some replayability, quickly became boring. A certain role in their case, perhaps, was played by the fact that they could not be played with on a note of nostalgia, which I myself sometimes allowed myself to be carried away.
A very disturbing aspect for some members of the group was, for example, yellow pegs and playing with them. That is, to be more precise, putting them in a basic position in which they are presented as a path that has not yet been explored. It took a while to get used to, but during the first game, this path fix wasn’t much fun. As a result, the rules became a small minus, but I have already got used to this trouble in recent weeks. If somewhere this is a problem based on the translation, then there is also a problem with the layout of the pages, which is not the same as in foreign language versions, which is a shame, because in the original, for example, the assessment is presented in one column, which you do not meet in the Czech version.
The obvious choice for Pac-Man fans?
Basically, PAC-MAN: The Board Game is a decent title, it’s a decent card-and-dice game that at its core is a tolerable adaptation of a legendary title that has shaped so many gaming projects. Prim plays an aspect of nostalgia here, so it’s worth buying this piece. The problem comes when you have little to no experience with the Pac-Man brand and are completely unfamiliar with old video games, because that’s where the strength of this piece lies.
In addition, a higher price tag may be a problem for some, which is probably associated primarily with the use of a well-known name. The title is intended primarily for yellow eater rock fans and those who like to collect various game-themed items. For those of you who are not interested in having something with Pac-Man at home, I would recommend getting another similar piece.
