Sony claims it’s “impossible to compete” with Call of Duty

Microsoft’s bid to take over Activision Blizzard continues, and along with it, Sony’s arguments are getting stronger. Of course, she does not want one of the largest players in the gaming market to fall into the hands of a competing player with her entire portfolio, so she raises various objections. The last one should be the fact that one of the most striking elements of the controversy, the Call of Duty series of games, has virtually no competitors to threaten it in the long run.

An example of the improbability of a rival is, according to Sony, the similarly tuned Battlefield series. The company itself talks about all this in a document published by it:Even assuming that SIE has the skills and resources to create a successful project like Call of Duty, building a Call of Duty-like franchise would take many years and billions of dollars. Creating a competitor to Call of Duty – and EA’s Battlefield example shows that a lot of money will have to be spent, that such an effort is likely to fail.

Sony, or rather its lawyers responsible for this report, make it clear what they think of Battlefield as such. In addition, they are quite interesting to work with facts, as an example of which is another statement where DICE rips off one of the creations of this studio: “Despite the similarities between Call of Duty and Battlefield, and despite EA’s track record in developing other successful AAA series (such as FIFA, Mass Effect, Need for Speed, and Star Wars: Battlefront), the Battlefield series has not kept up with them. As of August 2021, Call of Duty has sold over 400 million games, while Battlefield has sold just 88.7 million copies.”

Sony claims

Microsoft has already offered Sony a number of different guarantees. However, the company with the PS4 and PS5 consoles in the stable was not enough. However, she herself forgets that it was she who for a long time used certain aspects of Call of Duty as elements exclusive to her hardware. How the entire acquisition will ultimately end is currently unknown. According to the server PC gamer The FTC may oppose this, at least in the states. And even if it does not come out, it is clear that before the entire agreement is implemented, Sony will try to throw some kind of stick at the competitor.
