The newly updated Microsoft Flight Simulator for the series’ 40th anniversary has managed to deliver an absolutely outstanding visual impact in terms of realism, and Neumann was well aware of the game’s potential when he presented it to Spencer.

“When we first made our presentation, the first demo I showed Phil was Seattle in 3D,” the developer said. “I literally flew over the Microsoft Campus, the building we’re in, and said, ‘Why are you showing me a video of Seattle?’ Then I realized I had it.”

“I said, ‘Real time,’ and he said, ‘Absolutely not possible!’ he said, and we realized we had something big on our hands.

“When we launched Microsoft Flight Simulator, there were people who loved or respected airplanes, but what they really liked was the representation of the planet: it was a great app that gained new fans.”
