According to Miyamoto, backward compatibility is now easier than ever.

While it used to be fairly common for new consoles to only have their own games and not games from the previous device, backwards compatibility is pretty much the norm these days. On Xbox Series X and S, you can easily play games from the very first Xbox. Sony’s offer is a little more modest, but you can still play PS4 games, select games from PS1, PS2, and through the cloud from PS3 to PS5.

However, Nintendo avoided backwards compatibility for a long time. Some devices have backwards compatibility, but there is simply no comprehensive one. However, Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto commented on this account as part of a question during the release of financial results. This was reported by VGC magazine.

“Recently, the gaming environment has become more standardized and we now have an environment that allows players to enjoy older games on newer consoles with more ease than ever before.” Miyamoto says. “But Nintendo’s strength lies in creating new video game experiences, so when we release new hardware in the future, we want to introduce unique video games that were not possible with previous hardware.”

So it seems that while Nintendo is aware of the popularity of backward compatibility, older games are not guaranteed to be supported on the new console. What’s more, Miyamoto’s statement suggests that it could be another revolution and not just a direct successor to the Switch. So let’s see what happens in the end. The Switch came out in 2017 and its hardware is really old so Nintendo can’t wait forever to release a new console.
