Collection of interviews from Level will be released in December

Level magazine, together with the Xzone game store, presented its first book edition – About games and people. This will be a collection of the best interviews created especially for this paper magazine.

You can count on recognition of the greatest legends of the world of video games. It won’t be missing John Romero (co-founder of id Software, creator of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake), Peter Molyneux (Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Black & White, Fable) or Warren Spector (Ultima, System Shock, Deus Ex, Epic Mickey).

The idea to publish a book of interviews came about as a result of the success of Level’s crowdfunding campaign on Startovač. Fans raised an incredible amount during the campaign to digitize the magazine’s entire archive. CZK 1,682,072 and fulfilled the required indicator by 1121%. The campaign also completed the authors’ tasks of publishing three books, the first of which concerns the best interviews.

“We selected interviews that were made over the last 10 years of Level’s existence. Ever since we took over the magazine from a major publisher, we’ve come to see interviews as one of the pillars of a new style of content. We traveled overseas to meet celebrities and did interviews in person or at least face to face over the Internet.” Martin Bach, co-editor of the book and co-owner of Level, describes the process.

Thanks to this personal involvement and the fact that the interviews are not focused on specific events of the period, the collection is a timeless read that reveals the personalities of the developers, their diversity of opinions and perspectives on video game culture. .

You will find in the book 37 celebrity interviews, many of which stood at the origins of video games at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. Others in the twenty-first century have advanced light-years in the same pastimes. Among them, for example, Warren Spector (Deus Ex), Richard Garriott (Ultima), John Romero (Doom), Brian Fargo (Wasteland, Fallout) or Ron Gilbert (Monkey Island). Of course, there is no shortage of Czech video game creators. Dan Vavra (Mafia, Kingdom Come) Marek Spaniel (Arma series) or Yakub Dvorsky (Machinarium, Samorost) and many others.

“When commissioning the book, together with the editors-in-chief of The Level, we fully agreed that such a publication deserves luxurious treatment, thanks to which it will become an indispensable decoration of the library. Thus, all 580 pages are printed on high-quality paper with a weight of 130 g, and the total weight of the book is close to 2 kg.” Martin Schovanek, co-owner of Xzone, explains the process of writing the book.

The entire editorial and graphic work was created directly at Level in order to maintain visual continuity with the magazine. The cover art was created by gaming matador and pixel artist Karel Matejka.

The book is available for pre-order exclusively on Xzone.cz for 990 CZK. It should reach readers by the Christmas holidays. The dimensions of the book are 170×235 mm.
