We have reached a time when the technological difference between new and old games is blurring. PlayStation in particular was ahead of its time with its exclusives and offers a balanced experience that you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else. But just like the eternal war between PC and console players, the same rages in Norse mythology where it affects nine worlds.
As the first God of War game set a very high bar for previous generation consoles and the hack and slash genre, Ragnarok polishes and improves just about everything: the campaign content, even more emphasis on storytelling and lore, the camera. work and cutscenes, it also features expanded original puzzles and abilities that greatly improve the combat system. However, the question arises whether all the changes will be enough for the players in the end. Graphically, however, the game looks very similar to the previous 2018 game at first glance.
This year, other games will face a similar problem. From Horizon Forbidden West through Overwatch 2 to the independent A Plague Tale: Requiem. All the mentioned games are graphically very similar to their predecessors. The harsh reality for developers is that casual gamers judge games even by how advanced their visuals are compared to the previous iteration.
But those who think so are depriving themselves of the incredible essence of video games, especially their gameplay. On the other hand, the fears of the players are justified. If you can’t push the game too far in the graphics and still use the same models, animations or entire locations, is there any chance the game won’t behave like an extended data disc or a spin-off? Of course, this sounds like a big, serious problem. However, if Ragnarok had not done so many things differently and well, then he would crush your fears, like Kratos in some kind of labyrinth.
When it comes to the hack and slash genre, God of War Ragnarök does everything you could wish for in terms of gameplay. With a modest number of main characters appearing in the story, the game tells the second chapter of the life of the war god Kratos and his son Atreus, with whom he faces the challenges of Norse mythology. Playing as both, you explore nine different worlds, each full of puzzles, platforming challenges and breathtaking combat – all on semi-open maps. Just like in a real adventure game, you will gradually unlock abilities, upgrade your equipment and complete side quests that tell the stories of other characters.
