PS5 and PS4 updates add new features

Sony Interactive Entertainment released the latest software update for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on Wednesday, March 23rd. Among the most important news are the addition of Open and Closed Party on both platforms and a UI update for the PlayStation 5. In addition, Sony Interactive Entertainment also confirmed that we will see variable refresh rate support on the PlayStation 5 in the “next months”.

Version Variable refresh rate (VRR) for PlayStation 5 is scheduled for the coming months. On HDMI 2.1 compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR will dynamically synchronize the display refresh rate to the PlayStation 5 output signal. As a result, the visual performance of PlayStation 5 games is improved and visual artifacts are minimized or completely eliminated. For many games, playback on the PlayStation 5 will be smoother as scenes are rendered immediately, graphics are sharper overall, and input lags are reduced. Previously released PlayStation 5 games must be optimized for VRR via a patch, and new games may already include VRR support.

Enabling Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is also possible for PS5 games that do not support it. While this feature may improve video quality, it may also cause unexpected visual effects. However, you can disable VRR support for these games at any time.
