Kratos will be back in a few days in the sequel to the Norse saga, but before you start playing and before you can read our review today, Santa Monica Studios disclosed graphics modes for all platforms on which the game is released. Some of the options were leaked unofficially a while ago, but now we’ve finally got them officially and all together.
Let’s start with the PlayStation 5 console, where there are the most modes today, but there are two main ones: performance and quality. In the former, you can expect dynamic 4K resolution that can go all the way down to 1440p. However, the frame rate should be stable at 60 fps. In quality mode, you can expect native 4K resolution, but at the cost of a frame rate that’s only 30fps.
In both cases, there is another option to enable the high frame rate feature. Combined with performance mode, you can expect higher frame rates, up to 120fps, but at the price of “only” 1440p resolution. In quality mode, you can get up to 40 frames per second, but the resolution is dynamic and the lowest value is 1800p. Here, too, in both cases there is another option, namely the inclusion of VRR (although this requires HDMI 2.1), which provides a smoother image and eliminates tearing. In quality mode, you can also get over 40fps with VRR.
Incidentally, HDMI 2.1 is a bit odd for this game because it shouldn’t be needed for high frame rates, only for VRR. However, developers are required to enable HFR in this standard.
As for the PS4 Pro, there are also two main modes to choose from. In terms of performance, the resolution goes from FullHD to 1656p with unlocked frame rates. In quality mode, you get a locked 30fps at dynamic resolutions from 1440p to 1656p.
You will no longer find any options on the standard PlayStation 4, i.e. PS4 Slim. Here the game will run in FullHD and 30 FPS.
