The first quarter of this year was filled with several successful projects. However, these weren’t always great games. As in the case of shifu, for example. The fall of Babylon seemed like a clear success, because title from the creators of Bayonetta and the second NieR. The combat system was supposed to be taken from those that, combined with the fact that this is a co-op game, sounds very cool, right? Well, unfortunately, it only sounds like that. The Fall of Babylon fails in presentation, story, gameplay and Even your graphic design can be sick. Unfortunately, I am not exaggerating. Almost everything went wrong here.
The game was not originally intendedat least not in this form. The name was first, according to unconfirmed information, created as Drakengard 4. If you are not familiar with this series, then this is a very successful and high-quality Japanese RPG, which later became a spin-off of the NieR series. It’s best to think of it as a combination of NieR: Automata with the canceled Scalebound. But as the title has evolved, a kind of hybrid of these worlds has been created, which differs only in a few parts, unfortunately none of them are good enough.
Let’s start with what you can notice right away. The graphic design is very outdated. It does not look like the previous generation of consoles at all, but rather the previous one. On the other hand, the game runs smoothly on older formations. But the strange overlay remains under the big question markwho is constantly in the game. I understand that the intention of the creators was to evoke the feeling of painting, but with every movement of the camera, this overlay will take on a strange spatial effect. Not only does he act anxious and weird, but with faster movements from him eyes can hurt. Don’t be afraid when you’re underwater or running fast in the rain. Not only did I get a headache during the passage of some missions, which does not happen to me in VR games either. The faded color palette doesn’t help either, as the game looks ugly even in the midst of nature.
In that action hack and slash online rpg you start missions in several places. The irony is that you will spend the first two hours in Babylon. Further you are waiting for various mines, mountains or forests. You are a prisoner whose only chance for redemption is to connect with the strange talisman on his back. Thus, you unwittingly become a Guardian, or a soldier with the ability to summon weapons, whose goal is to protect the locals and repel the attack of the very dozen villains who are evil only because they simply want to be evil. To be honest, you don’t even have to follow the plot because it’s insanely uninteresting and full of clichés. It doesn’t help the storytelling either, where most of the time you’re just looking at pictures of your characters intertwined against a painted background. At the same time, character models often do not cast a shadow. Only in exceptional cases does the game become more difficult. But when it comes down to it, it’s a wonderful experience. Too bad there isn’t anymore.
The same can be said about interesting enemies. Most of the time you will be fighting against the same knights and goblins. Which wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t have a lot of stamina. Is it a big sponge for bullets or targets that you fill with several magazines, although in this case it’s more like a slanting sponge? As a result of their stamina, you will not feel strong even with the best equipment, which will quickly lead to a strong sense of boredom. Luckily boss fights are better. Although they last a long time, they have several stages and original attacks. For them, you suddenly have to use defense and evasion, which you don’t have to think about at all when playing.
