It’s only been a few weeks since Nvidia’s new graphics card, the GeForce RTX 4090, hit the market. Of course, it already had a number of first owners who could count on near-unsurpassed performance, but as we’ll now find out, it wasn’t without problems. . The problem is caused by a new power connector labeled 12VHPWR that is used on the card. Most sources don’t even offer it yet, so Nvidia also ships an adapter with graphics.

It all started with a post on Reddit by user reggie_gakill who shared two photos of a wrinkled connector.

“I don’t know how it happened, but it smelled terrible and I could see the smoke” he wrote According to him, it is the adapter that is behind this, because the video card as such is said to be fine.

A similar experience was shared by a user with the nickname NoDuelsPolicy, who had a black screen during the game, and the fans accelerated to the limit. After turning it off and then inspecting it, he discovered that the adapter had been damaged in his case as well.

At the same time, the PCI-SIG consortium claimed that problems with the new connector could have arisen even before the release of the RTX 4090. It heats up more than optimal, and in some cases can lead to melting. However, we do not yet know how widespread the problem is and whether these are isolated cases. Time will tell.
