FSR 2.0 Offers Extensive Support and Rapid Implementation
Last week we wrote that AMD has finally officially introduced the second version of the FidelityFX Super Resolution upscaling technology, which is designed to provide much higher image quality. Even then it was said that we will learn more information at the GDC this year, and it happened.
FSR 2.0 offers 4 modes: quality (1.5x scaling), balanced (1.7x), performance (2.0x) and super performance (3.0x). The big advantage of this technology will be wide support by all graphics card manufacturers. For AMD, this is the Polaris generation (RX 500) and above, for Nvidia, the Pascal series (GTX 10) and above. In addition, FSR 2.0 should be very accessible to developers. According to AMD, it will be implemented in a game that already supports DLSS in just 3 days.
The release of FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 is expected in the second quarter of this year. In addition to PC, he also looks at the Xbox console.
New information about XeSS
The second similar technology that should enter the market in the near future is Intel XeSS. It was introduced last year, but we also saw new parts at GDC.
In particular, it was announced that XeSS will offer 5 modes: Ultra Quality (1.3x scaling), Quality (1.5x), Balanced (1.7x), Performance (2.0x) and Ultra Performance (2. 3x). The last mode mentioned will allow you to double the frame rate compared to the native resolution, but in this case, you will also pay quite a lot for image quality.
Like FSR, XeSS relies on wide availability. A version using DP4a instructions will be available on video cards from all manufacturers. But the technology will work best on Intel graphics, which will use acceleration through the so-called Matrix Engines (XMX).
Unfortunately, we still don’t know the release date. Either way, the first Alchemist cards should arrive on March 30th. But these will only be those for laptops.
DirectStorage in Forspoken
The last innovation concerns also technologies, in particular DirectStorage from Microsoft. Last time we wrote that we finally got an official release, but so far no game supports this feature. The first game we already know will receive support is Luminous Productions’ RPG Forspoken. And this is a game that we could see in action at the GDC.
The developers showed what technology the game supports with the help of a video that is already available on YouTube. And among them, of course, DirectStorage, which works wonders in Forspoken. On an NVMe SSD, the game loaded in under 2 seconds, on a classic SSD in about 3 seconds, and on an HDD it took about 20 seconds, which is not a bad result. It looks like DirectStorage is eventually affecting all types of storage, which is definitely good news for gamers who still use HDDs.
