The 1980s brought many cult films. Among them is Ghostbusters, a comedy about a group of scientists who switch to the supernatural. They run around New York hunting ghosts and trying to avoid the slime, more or less successfully. This classic and its relaxed vibe is now brought to you in a new co-op game that Releases October 18 for PC, Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S.
The asymmetrical gameplay of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed puts you in control of a quartet of tamers, with a fifth player taking on the role of the ghost himself. The task is simple: the ghost must scare as many visitors as possible, take possession of as many objects as possible and escape from a gang of four chasing him. As the creators themselves admit, the game can also be used at a party with friends: the controls are simple, and if there are few players, they will be supplemented by artificial intelligence. But local collaboration is not possible – only online. However, the game allows cross-play.
The further you advance and the more experience you gain, the more types of spirits or arenas you unlock. “As you progress through the game, you unlock, for example, new headgear, goggles, and gear in general,” lead developer Jared Gerritzen told Zing.cz when we met at Gamescom in Cologne at the end of August (you can find impressions of the game here) . But all this can be obtained just by playing, you can’t buy anything for real money. “We don’t do microtransactions,” Gerritzen adds.
You can customize your tamer to your liking – even the shape of the body. “We wanted you to feel a real connection between you and your curator. To make you think: yes, he looks like me, ”explains the developer.
Two legendary “tamers” also voiced the game: Dan Aykroyd, who played Ray in the movie, and Ernie Hudson as Winston. Both are now acting as experienced guides, informing you, for example, about different kinds of spirits. “When Dan was recording, he stopped one day and said to us, ‘You guys did it, that’s exactly what Ray would have said,'” Gerritzen recalls of the shoot, not hiding his enthusiasm.
Both he and the head of Illfonic, which in addition to Ghostbusters is also behind the 2020 multiplayer game Predator: Hunting Grounds, are movie fans from the 80s. “Of course, it’s a little bit about nostalgia. I’m in my forties and Ghostbusters is one of my favorite films,” explains Charles Brungardt. “But I think Ghostbusters also has a very interesting world. Some of the most creative films were made in the 1980s.”
The Gamescom 2022 report on ZING.cz features Acer Nitro gaming laptops with processors up to Intel Core i7.
