If you had to pick the most anticipated game of 2019, it probably wasn’t the one from French company Asobo Studio called A Plague Tale: Innocence. But if you had to choose the game in 2020 that surprised you the most in the past, your choice could be based on it. Neither the developers nor the players had any idea that A Plague Tale would become an award-winning and beloved game, and three years later would see a sequel called Requiem.
But such enthusiasm carries with it a considerable responsibility; because where else can you get a sequel to surpass what is essentially ideal, in a genre and a world that is also very limited? Surprisingly, you don’t have to go far. And Plague Tale: Requiem proves that even with the same game, you can bring something unique.
Plague Tale: Requiem third-person action-adventure the action takes place in a very linear world with strict rules, in which you will often find yourself in the midst of stealth, complex battles in which you will especially appreciate your slingshot, crossbow and alchemical ingredients, environmental puzzles and really diverse locations. If I didn’t tell you it’s a sequel, you probably wouldn’t even know from the main description that the game is different from its 2019 predecessor. And that’s it: get ready for the second part does not bring innovations, but rather grinds and files existing game mechanics, storytelling, art style, and associated locations. This could be a problem if he didn’t do so damn well.
The action takes place approximately six months after the events of the first volume. Siblings Amicia and Hugo, along with their friend Lucas and mother Beatrice, want to find a place to call home and where they will not be afflicted by the spreading plague. Hugo is still struggling with the poison in his blood, and Amicia is trying to find a way to save her little brother. And here I would like to directly answer a question that some may have: yes you have to go through the first part; or at least you should. And I’m not only saying this because Innocence deserves it, but you’d be very quick to carve one of the title’s greatest qualities from your experience, and you’d have a hard time finding sympathy for the characters. Also, the title does a great job of following you through the story, it manages to introduce a limited number of characters, but each one is believable. And that’s how he manages to build some plot twists.
