Nutritious gameplay demo of the Dead Space remake

The Dead Space series is celebrating its 14th anniversary today, and the developers at Motive Studios have chosen the landmark October 14th date for a new livestream. Of course, there was a lot of talk about what the writers are focusing on in the remake. But most importantly, we saw a full-fledged, approximately eight-minute demo right from the gameplay.

In that one we see several locations, while we also have a comparison with the original, and the difference is really huge. But of course there are more innovations, such as free movement in zero gravity or what Isaac says. However, the writers re-emphasized that Isaac would only respond to people who spoke to him. But if he is alone, he is silent. This should lead to even more immersion as the dialogue becomes more believable and the spooky moments don’t lose their atmosphere.

In addition, the remake is supposed to be playable “in one frame”, it has no loading screens and you will be able to move around the Ishimura spaceship completely freely. However, not all passes are the same, as Motive has created what they call an “intensity director”. Thanks to this, for example, the game will give you a moment of peace if you have just fought a bunch of enemies. At the same time, however, you should not count on the fact that if you return to the rooms you have already visited, nothing awaits you. On the contrary, an unpleasant surprise may happen. The game can also often play with light and sound to create an even creepier atmosphere.

In addition to the gameplay demo, we also got our first look at Isaac’s helmet, which is part of the Limited Run Games Collector’s Edition.

And finally, some information outside the stream itself, because at the same time the first previews from magazines such as IGN, Gamespot, PC Gamer or the Easy Allies channel began to appear. Impressions so far are the most positive.

VGC magazine then had the opportunity to interview creative director Roman Campos-Oriola and touch on the future of Motive. An Iron Man game was recently announced, but VGC’s Andy Robinson wondered what the future holds for the Dead Space series. So he asked the following:

“Dead Space 2 is my favorite (part). Does your commitment to Iron Man rule out the possibility of doing something like this with him (DS2) at some point (like remake #1)? Or is it not necessary?

Of course, Campos-Oriola did not answer directly. He just pointed to the public relations staff, laughed and said: “You want him to shoot me in the face?”

Whether or not this confirms that Motive is also planning a remake of Part 2, I’ll leave that up to you. However, it would certainly make sense if they somehow continued their efforts. The revival of such a long-dead brand certainly did not happen for the sake of one game.

Dead Space Remake releases on January 27, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
