The new Star Trek game is for families. But trekks can have fun too, says developer

The sci-fi world of Star Trek expands almost every year. One of the latest additions was last year’s Star Trek Phenomenon (originally Star Trek: The Prodigy). If you or your kids enjoyed it, or if you just want to introduce young people to what Star Trek is, check it out. Today October 14 the cooperative game Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova was released, PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

The action-adventure from developer Tessera Studios is already based on the series, as the title suggests, but has more to offer. The action takes place on completely new planets and should complement the first series of the TV show by story. The main characters are the same as in the TV series Gwyn and Dahl. This time he is trying to save his friends and prevent the destruction of the entire planetary system. Ella Purnell and Brett Gray once again provided their voices, confirms Rudy Lamy, producer at Outright Games, in an interview with Zing.cz. “And maybe a ‘television’ surprise or two,” he suggests.

When I was little, I used to watch TV at home after school. Shows like MacGyver, Knight Rider… and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Do you think the old Star Trek or The Next Generation with Captain Picard might also appeal to kids?

That’s the beauty of the Star Trek world. He has captured the imagination of audiences around the world who see themselves in his characters and scenes. At the heart of all Star Trek stories is something kindred and human that can touch anyone. In our game, we were able to use the wonders and discoveries that Star Trek already offers. And so to involve children. But in the end, even old trekkers can enjoy a new adventure that will enrich their experience of this world. This is all addressed through characters, technology, storytelling, and the introduction of entirely new planets.

Your game is for children and, as you say, for their parents. What do you mean by this in practice?

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is aimed at children and people of all ages. That’s why we made the game accessible, yet true to the Star Trek tradition and the rules of this world. This means that both the story and the gameplay are easy to understand but have deeper layers to them.

In the center of everything is the colorful crew of the Protostar ship, humor and jokes, as well as emotions associated with the relationships of the characters. The essence of the game is to explore the world and various adventures in which players use technology and solve mysteries.

Local co-op allows parent and child to play together. What if a parent used Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova as a gateway to the world of video games? Can it be used as the very first game a child tries?

Nothing compares to the first experience of the game when you are still a child. We would be honored if our game was the first for children. We hope that with the research and discoveries we have laid out, this will be a great experience for them. We have focused on the co-op mode, which allows friends and families to play together, and this creates a new dimension to the game. However, you can play alone at any time, and only you control the main characters Dala and Gwyn.

We’ve put a lot of effort into making sure players always understand what their current goal is. We’ve also introduced abilities and upgrades, some of which are automatic and some of which are optional. Thus, players and children can choose whether they want to learn and use these traditional video game systems or not. It’s also a great introduction to the Star Trek: Prodigy television series.

Your game includes shooting and fighting, as well as solving riddles and puzzles. How difficult is it?

The game is adapted to the cooperation of two players or one player and artificial intelligence, but you can also call for help from crew members – Jankom Poga, Rock-Tahk, Zera, Murph. However, they will only offer their skills to you after you rescue them. Dal can use phasers in combat, while Gwyn is agile and useful in close combat as she uses her mind-controlled “living weapon” Lepnin. As for reconnaissance, the rest of the crew can help here. For example, Jankom can open doors to secret areas where collectibles are hidden.

How did you solve the texts? I mean dialogues or tutorials. An eight-year-old child from the Czech Republic would certainly have problems with the English text. Wouldn’t that be a hindrance to him in the game?

While the story is true to the world of Star Trek, so it’s full of technology and interesting phenomena, the characters and their dialogue are in keeping with Star Trek: Prodigy, so they have a more youthful and approachable tone. The choice of voice actors for the English version of the series and the writing team have allowed us to stay true to the TV show and its style so that the game is accessible to both young and old fans.

The main characters are the same as in the series, Dal and Gwyn. Their mission is to save their friends and the entire planetary system before they are destroyed by a supernova…

We were very lucky that we were able to pick up the main characters from the series, as well as stunt doubles who played their roles. But expect various secrets that you will discover during the gameplay.

Does this mean that Ella Purnell and Brett Gray voiced the main couple?

Yes, we were honored to choose the charismatic Ella Purnell and Brett Grey. Kate Mulgrew then reprized her role as Captain Janeway, who helps the cadets, with Jason Mantzoukas joining her as Juncom. And then we have Riley Alazraki as Rock-Tah. Dee Bradley Baker once again did an incredible job as Murph.

We will also be introducing a few additions to the game that we hope fans will enjoy. And… there may be one or two “television” surprises, but I don’t want to spoil them for you now.

What other Easter eggs can we expect from the show or the Star Trek universe as a whole?

I’ll avoid details for the sake of not spoiling the experience, but there are collectibles that the player can find and then view on the Protostar ship. Or the story elements associated with the Star Trek: Prodigy series featuring the Wau N’Akat race.

I have already read in earlier comments that the game is faithful to the Star Trek: Prodigy series, but at the same time it is made so that even small players can play it. So isn’t her story or characters oversimplified?

What was great about working with the teams around Star Trek and Nickelodeon was that we had the support and leeway to add different ideas to the universe. We have added an entirely new part of the universe to explore. The game takes place on the alien worlds of Orisi, Mirios and Taresse, orbiting a star with a Dyson Sphere..

We worked closely with Nickelodeon and Paramount (who broadcast the series – ed.) and in the first series we found a period of time, several weeks, that is not filled. It was logical to place the game in this space.

Can your game introduce kids to the world of Star Trek?

Definitely! Not only is the game connected to the Star Trek: Prodigy series and the wider world of Star Trek, it also enriches its universe in a way that “newbies” will enjoy. Our goal was to create a complete interactive experience in the world of Star Trek that will make fans feel like they are in direct contact with and exploring new areas of the universe. We hope everyone enjoys the game.
