“From October 4, 2022, all players on all platforms, including consoles, will need to have a phone number linked to their battle.net account in order to play Overwatch 2. The same phone number cannot be used on multiple accounts at the same time, and players must use the same phone number to create a new account. A phone number can only be used once when creating a new account, and some types of numbers, including prepaid and VOIP numbers, cannot be used for SMS Protection.”
They also state: “SMS Protection must be enabled to play Overwatch 2, even if you have an older version of Overwatch.”
This choice will definitely be effective in the fight. cheat, but the majority of users using services like Cricket Wireless simply cannot play. Many simply don’t want or can’t get phone subscriptions for Overwatch 2.
Some posts on social media, like RLmclovin’s on Reddit, highlighted how this choice has penalized some less affluent users: “I have Cricket Wireless. That’s what my family can afford. What else can I say to swap it for a video game with my family. This I’m angry and embarrassed for not reaching the standard. I never thought I’d be able to play Overwatch anymore because I couldn’t afford another phone subscription, but here it is… Blizzard prevented me from playing the first company video game that made me feel pathetic.”
