It’s normal to see a game from a well-established developer from time to time that doesn’t quite fit into the studio’s portfolio. And it’s good that this is happening. Anyone who tries this digression usually has the opportunity to imagine, tell or design something outside of the studio’s usual comfort zone. GROUNDED is one such name. At first glance, the children’s animated first-person game hides interesting survival game rules. And on a relatively small surface, it is bursting with design ideas that will surely appeal to a new audience. But it will also enrich those who have recorded hundreds of hours of survival games.
Grounded has recently joined the Obsidian Entertainment catalogue. The title went through a typical pre-access. And it was he who gave the developers enough feedback that they decided to close the game and finally release it.
In the game, you will find yourself in the shoes of one of the four children: Max, Willow, Peter or Ellie, who were thrown into the experiment by a scientific organization. This allows people to shrink down to the size of a typical insect. Somehow, the science project went from nine to five, and four kids got stuck in Dr. Wendell’s forgotten garden.
It doesn’t matter which child you choose. They all have the same abilities. The game, unlike most MMO survival games, is designed to be played by one player, I played most of the game alone, but you will enjoy playing with four more. The developers allow you to make a single player game available for multiplayer play at any time. Or you can even set up a shared world that’s online almost all the time so friends can play even when someone in the group is offline.
In some ways, Grounded is no different from a classic survival game. You have to keep track of several statistics throughout the game: whether your character is thirsty, hungry, too hot or too cold. As part of the collection of raw materials around the world, you can create a small base from ordinary tools, or you can complicate everything and make entire fortresses. And later, with better equipment, you dare to build more advanced tools, such as a furnace, various traps or zip-lines. You can even tame some bugs and keep them as pets.
