Impressions of playing World War 3

The end of September was very pleasant for fans of multiplayer shooters. In addition to the Call fo Duty: Modern Warfare II open beta, they can also play World War 3 from September 29th. The game from the developers from the Polish studio The Farm 51 has a very heartbreaking story behind it. After four long years in Early Access, it is finally entering the open beta phase, available to all interested parties. Since the beta version is not limited in time, we can talk about the so-called soft launch. However, this is not a full release. In addition, the game is completely free. After the tragedy in the form of Battlefield 2042, we went without hesitation and with gusto to find out if World War 3 is even worth installing after all this fuss.

Solid gunplay and great weapon customization

I would call World War III something between Battlefield and Call of Duty. He borrowed a lot from both mentioned series. Here we find a mode that’s practically similar to Battlefield’s Conquest, or a hitting system that seems to have fallen out of favor with Call of Duty’s kill streaks. Yes, the authors were very inspired, but personally I don’t see a problem in this. As the title suggests, the game takes place during the fictional (I hope we stick to the fiction) World War III. Therefore, the arsenal of weapons is very modern. All equipment can be modified at will. You gain experience and levels as you play. Thanks to this, you gradually open up more and more opportunities. A sort of classic of today’s online shooters. But the creators deserve credit for the overall modification system. This one is really successful and can easily compete with both mentioned series, which have many times more budget. Almost anything you can think of can be edited. From collimators to stocks, magazines and lasers, to the color of weapons and equipment and the appearance of your fighter.

The arsenal of weapons is very modern.

The shooting itself is very enjoyable. The weapons look quite realistic and there are plenty to choose from. The TTK (time required to kill an enemy) is set to a solid level, so there is no need to shoot the enemy with the entire magazine. Weapon recoil is balanced so you don’t have to worry about it being a military sim like the Arma series. The fighting technique is really strong. But that does not mean that you will become immortal because of it. Just a few skillful shots from the RPG-7 and the tank is a thing of the past. You also need to pay attention to where you are shooting. Because World War 3 has friendly fire and you can hurt and kill teammates.

Unfortunately not enough content

The biggest sticking point in World War 3 is the lack of content. The game has only two modes – Tactical Ops (analogous to Conquest) and the classic Team Deathmatch. In Tactical Ops, two teams of 20 players compete to capture as many strategic points on the map as possible. Here I was interested in the points linking system, thanks to which you gain or lose points. Team Deathmatch is a 10v10 battle that takes place on smaller variations of the map. There are only five of them in the game – Moscow, Berlin, Warsaw, Smolensk and Polyarny. This is a huge shame because you can see that the creators put a lot of thought into the creation of the maps. They even completely redesigned them during early access.

Play two modes on five maps very fast. If the authors focused on creating content, and not on adding cosmetic mods to the game that can be bought for real money, they would do better. Yes, there are microtransactions in WW3. However, at this time, you cannot purchase anything in the game that could affect the gameplay other than appearance. The Season Pass must also be added to the game. I understand that you need to pay for development from something, and small studios have a hard time. But if you don’t provide the content that players want within a few years, you can lose it very quickly. I hope the situation will change with the start of the first season, which I hope will be released as soon as possible.

Average visuals, great sound, terrible servers

During the Early Access phase, the game suffered from countless issues. The optimization was tragic and the servers were terrible. Luckily the first one got better. On a setup with a Ryzen 5600x, RTX 3070Ti, and 16GB of RAM, I never dropped below 100fps at maximum detail at 1440p. The graphics of the game do not offend or inspire. But I can knock out a map of Smolensk, which is in a forested area and is really beautiful. I did not find any critical bugs during the game. However, constant problems with the server really spoiled my experience.

Even when World War 3 came out on Steam, its downloads were in full swing. Steam only downloads the game launcher, which then downloads the game itself via P2P (Peer-to-peer). I’ve spent over eight hours downloading the roughly 70GB the game takes up from your drive. So I don’t understand why WW3 is even on Steam. Launching the game was also an almost superhuman task. Constant errors on the server side prevented me from connecting, and queues were already lining up when about five thousand players were playing at the same time. Terror. Authors really should invest in new infrastructure. On the other hand, I have to praise the sound system. Weapon sounds are perfect, and if you’re playing with headphones, you’ll also appreciate the perfectly audible footsteps of others.

Potential cannot be denied

World War III definitely has potential. But small Polish studio The Farm 51 has really taken a big bite and is faltering in a lot of places. Very addictive gameplay is overshadowed by a critical lack of content and problems with the server. But if I look at how the last Battlefield turned out, I must admit that the budget is not everything. WW3 definitely plays better and has a better atmosphere. With fewer players on the map, the game will appeal even to fans of a more tactical approach. If the creators introduce new content in the near future, they can finally celebrate the desired success. If this does not happen, the game will most likely disappear into the abyss of gaming history. If you’re looking for an online shooter that’s similar to Battlefield or Call of Duty, be sure to check out World War 3. It’s sure to keep you entertained for a few nights and won’t cost you a dime.
