Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Multiplayer Beta Impressions

Another fall, another Call of Duty. Yes, right. This formula, already tested today, does not change. The last two parts – “Cold War” and “Vanguard”, in my opinion, were not very successful. This is if we are talking about the multiplayer component of the game. The campaign of both mentioned titles was not bad, but not the turn. In my opinion, the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot is unbeatable so far. On October 28, 2022, a full-fledged successor, Modern Warfare II, is released. Over the past few weekends, the creators have given us a glimpse into the multiplayer portion of the game, so we at the editorial team haven’t been shy about returning to the modern battlefield.

Dangerous innovation

When I first launched the multiplayer beta, I was immediately drawn to the behavior of the weapons. Compared to Cold War and Vanguard, it is much more realistic. To a greater extent, this applies to returns, which are sometimes exaggerated. General movement on the map is carried out at a slower pace. That is, the series. The cardinal change is the indication of enemies on the map. The ones over there are red dots that appeared on the radar every time the enemy fired a silent weapon. The so-called You will now see “red dots” only in the case of using different technologies, such as the classic UAV. I applaud this change, as it frees the game up a bit from the frenetic pursuit of dots on the map. But I see a problem with the blue dots that represent comrades. Since they can be seen through a wall, you will often aim at an enemy with this dot hovering over their head, pointing to a teammate in a completely different room. Completely incomprehensible design decision.

Weapon behavior is more realistic.

With the new weapon modification system – Gunsmith 2.0 – there is a lot of confusion. This time, you unlock new weapons by gradually expanding the so-called weapon trees. The process is not explained to you in any way, and thanks to the terrible user interface, unlocking is a complete ordeal. Overall, the user interface is very unintuitive and feels like it was made for a mobile platform. Perhaps this has something to do with the announced Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. Menu navigation will soon give you a headache. In order to change the attachment on the weapon, you need to press at least five times, after which one wrong step means returning to the original menu. Horror and destruction. Hopefully the user interface will change by release.

Great gunplay, comical aim assist

The new Call of Duty plays similarly to its Modern Warfare predecessor from 2019. TTK – Time To Kill (the time required to kill the enemy) is much shorter here than in the previous two parts. I welcome this very much. It always bothered me that I had to dump half the store into the enemy. But don’t be fooled. MW2 is definitely not a realistic military action game, but a shooter for the masses. It can be seen that the creators are mainly focused on casual players on consoles, because the so-called Aim Assist (aiming assistance) on gamepads is frankly comical. If you’re a keyboard and mouse player like me, you might think that half the gamers use hacks. But we all know that, money is everything. The footage itself is great though. The weapon looks quite realistic and you can feel its power when you pull the trigger. The eternal problem is again the current spawning system and its poor quality. You will often appear in front of the main enemy, and then tear your hair out. You will feel it most on smaller maps.

New fashion, return and old acquaintances

In addition to the well-received modes that the creators of the series have been bringing us for more than a decade, Modern Warfare II also offers news. The first of these is Prisoner Rescue, in which two teams of six players compete. The task, as the name suggests, is to rescue the hostages. Another new mode is Knock Out. Again, this is a 6v6 battle, but this time the goal is to get and protect the deck. For the first time since the release of Modern Warfare 3 in 2011, third-person Moshpit returns, a collection of classic modes on smaller maps, but this time in third-person. Well, at least here you can view the purchased skins, which, as always, will be a huge amount.

Modern Warfare II offers new modes.

Ground War, which premiered at MW 2019, has undergone some pretty significant changes. The points that need to be captured and defended are more balanced this time. However, the level of destruction of the surrounding area is appalling. You won’t destroy almost anything. You will even get stuck in the tank and in the regular trash can. Hello creators! What should it be? Invasion mode is quite good for leveling weapons, as it has a large number of NPC characters that did not take their brains out much. But overall, I found it rather boring. Also, graphics performance stuttered strangely during it.

technical goulash

Modern Warfare II looks good. It won’t blur your vision (if it doesn’t happen to me), but it’s an improvement over Vanguard’s “washed out” colors. Performance is already a little worse. On my rig (Ryzen 5600x, RTX 3070Ti, and 16GB RAM), the game ran in one mode at 2560×1440 and another time in the same mode. I’ve noticed the biggest problems in Invasion mode. While in one match there was a stable hundred or more frames, in the second I did not sweat more than forty on the same map. I also had a few times where an unbearable rainbow glow appeared on the screen and I had to restart the match. Since I don’t have this problem in any other game, I don’t attribute it to a video card error. Flashing the Kill Cam frame doesn’t add much to the fun either.

The performance of the game is quickly improved thanks to the use of Nvidia DLSS technology. But this will cause unsightly image blur even in Quality mode. On the contrary, AMD FidelityFX technology sharpens your game perfectly. But you lose about a quarter of the performance. I hope the developers optimize the game before release, but when I remember how badly Warzone is running for me at the moment, I don’t give it much of a chance. MWII certainly doesn’t look good enough to have such issues, and many users complain about poor performance when using high-end hardware (RTX 3080, etc.). But this is a beta, so you should expect problems.

Fun but problematic

Did I enjoy the new Call of Duty beta? Definitely yes. Did bugs, crashes and poor optimization ruin my experience? One hundred percent. The Modern Warfare 2019 beta gave me a noticeably better experience from the first launch. However, the creators from Infinity Ward promise really big support for their game. Some parts (Warzone 2.0 and DMZ) will be available for free at the end of autumn/winter. It’s definitely better multiplayer than Vanguard and Cold War. However, the quality of the 2019 reboot is still not up to par in my opinion. Terrible user interface, poor teammate display, bleak spawning, and technical issues can all be fixed by the release date. I hope this happens. If not, then that will be a problem. The relatively high price of seventy euros does not help the game either. Call of Duty is a stalwart of the genre, but every year I think the show can’t hurt either for a short break or a long break.
