Phasmophobia Ghost ID Still Has Hidden Depths

I thought I had seen and heard it all when it came to identifying Phasmophobia ghosts. Nearly a year after the horror game was released, countless studios of the unknown have compiled just about everything there is to know about ghost behavior, or so I thought. My mental journal automatically crossed off potential candidates after registering even a fleeting glimpse of the phantom orb, and I had a (usually) clear idea when the phantom seemed more aggressive than the others.

Then one night, when I heard something new from the perfume box, he interrupted me. This sound was not the usual “behind” her or other usual expressions of the restless dead. It wasn’t even a statement at all, not technically. I heard heavy breathing coming from the perfume box, the sound of someone standing too close and squeezing every possible drop of discomfort from their unwanted proximity.

It scared me, and I’m not easily scared by phasmophobia, anyway. But I chalked it up to an unexpected interaction I’ve never heard of before or, more cynically, a well-timed gasp from a teammate trying to fool everyone. The investigation continued, we solved the mystery and I didn’t think about it.

Then I saw a post on Reddit from OctoberWish asking if anyone else had felt breath, and it turned out that the breath sounds coming from the scent box are unique to just two ghosts: Deogen and Mimicking.

The opening impressed me. It adds an exciting new dimension to the use of the spirit box, yes, but even more interesting is the question it raises as to whether this was an actual in-game event. Maybe this interaction is unique, or maybe Kinetic Games has cleverly included some alternate interactions in each category that only happen with very specific ghosts.

Whatever the answer, it points to a phenomenon beyond what the ghosts manage to pull out of their proverbial hats. Even after spending so much time playing Phasmophobia, I can’t wait to come back and see what else they can show me.
