GTA 4 Definitive Edition, an ambitious GTA modding project aimed at improving sandbox PC gaming, has been taken down following a DMCA takedown notice as Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar continues to battle GTA 6 leaks.
The Definitive Edition Project is a player-run permanent GTA modding site that brings visual and performance improvements to various Rockstar games, including GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, San Andreas and Bully. He also developed GTA 4: Definitive Edition, a set of external and custom mods available in a single download that aims to improve the visuals of the 2008 open-world sequel, as well as address performance issues associated with the PC version.
However, as Rockstar Games and publisher Take-Two dispute the gameplay and leak details of Grand Theft Auto 6, the Definitive Edition project received a DMCA notice, resulting in the removal of GTA 4: Definitive Edition from their website. and their Discord servers. No DMCA publisher is listed, but the notice states that the mod “allegedly infringes the copyright of the creator of the file.”
Other Definitive Edition project downloads aimed at enhancing the 3D-era GTA trilogy, as well as The Warriors, Manhunt and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, remain available. “No DMCA for the original trilogy (yet), just GTA 4” Speech Project. “For now, I think the trilogy is safe. All links to GTA 4 have been removed from our website and Discord.”
An official GTA 4 remaster was reportedly already in development by Rockstar, but it was canceled after receiving 2021’s Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, as well as a planned remaster of the original Red Dead Redemption. Despite GTA 6 leaks revealing that the upcoming game will be set in Vice City, focus on heists and feature a male and female lead, Rockstar claims that the game’s release will not be delayed.
