First impressions of the Andor series

Star Wars is the universe that I grew up with from a young age. I devoured the first six episodes in one sitting. If a Star Wars game came out, I should have had it. I played Star Wars cards, collected stickers, bought T-shirts and linens. Plain and simple, fan what it should be. It still partially sticks to me, and my play corner is decorated with a few figurines, Lego or an LED lamp from Aliexpress. Women are not very attracted to this, but it does not bother me at all. I just love Star Wars. However, after the seventh, eighth and ninth episodes, I still have a bitter taste on my tongue. From my point of view, the new trilogy is a great misfortune. The love for this universe was preserved only by Rogue One, which I still consider one of the best Star Wars films.

After Disney acquired the rights to the brand, it began releasing series from a galaxy far, far away in addition to its own trilogy. I liked The Mandalorian and thought it couldn’t be much better. Boba Fett’s book, about a bounty hunter, neither offended nor excited. When your main focus is on the main character of another series, then something is wrong. Not to mention a bunch of teenagers riding sci-fi versions of Vespas. The recently released Obi-Wan Kenobi was terrible and I didn’t have the energy to finish it. Horror, embarrassment and infantile slush. The long-announced series Andor left me completely indifferent. But as a true fan, I welcome every new work, so this Wednesday I’m making time for the first three of the twelve upcoming parts. I do not regret anything.

THE FOLLOWING TEXT CONTAINS SPOILERS.

Beginning of Cassian Andor

The action takes place approximately five years before the events of the aforementioned Rogue One. The rebels, as we know them, are just being formed. The central character is the thief Cassian Andor, who makes a living by selling stolen goods. So the plot is about a time before he joined the rebellion led against the Galactic Empire. Cassian travels to the industrial planet Morlana-1 to find his lost sister. During a search, he gets into an unprovoked fight with two security officers and accidentally kills one of them. To get out of the predicament, he is forced to kill the second guard as well. This is followed by a dash to the planet Ferrix, where he intends to sew for a while. Here, she asks her friend Bix to contact a human trafficker so that he can sell the extremely rare and threatening Starpath navigation technology to the Empire.

The story takes place five years before the events of Rogue One.

Meanwhile on Morlun, One Deputy Chief Inspector Cyril Karn decides to disobey the order of his superior, who is trying to hide the death of a guard, and begins the search on his own. He manages to locate the ship that Cassian Andor took to Morlun Odin and track it to Ferryx. They also learn that Cassian is from the planet Kenari that Maarva rescued him from, a woman who took him in at a young age. We will look into Cassian’s past in the form of flashbacks that accompany us in each episode. Bix’s friend Timm reports Cassian to the authorities, and they subsequently issue a warrant for his arrest. Also, I prefer not to describe the story because I don’t want to spoil the experience itself. However, the plot is very entertaining and pleasantly surprised me. And this despite the fact that it is moving at a rather slow pace.

Heavy atmosphere of oppression

The creators of the Andor series have relied on a dark, depressing and painful atmosphere that perfectly echoes the role of the Galactic Empire as the oppressor of the entire galaxy. The bet paid off. What you see on screen has a depressing Orwellian feel, helped by the constantly dreary weather. The people of Ferrix show discontent, fear and unwillingness to submit to the iron fist of the Empire. Fear is a good servant, but a bad master, so most keep silent and keep up. Andor slowly creeps into the soul as you watch, and I’m very glad that the creators decided this time to abandon the abundance of childish jokes that, in my opinion, were too excessive in The Mandalorian and The Boba Fett Book (not to mention Obi-Wan). Genre-wise, Andor is more of a spy thriller with sci-fi elements than pure futuristic drama. It fits perfectly into the story and is a very nice change. Bravo. Applause to the creator.

Qualitative composition

With the series from the Star Wars universe, I often witnessed situations during which the actors clearly annoyed me. The already mentioned teenage group from The Book of Boba Fett or the actors in Obi-Wan were, in my opinion, a terrible thing. However, this time the casting was successful. Cassian Andor was played by Mexican actor Diego Luna, just like in Rogue One. You may also know Diego from, for example, “Narcos: Mexico”, in which he played the main negative character – the drug lord Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo. The actor is undoubtedly very good and lived up to his standards even in the case of the role of Cassian. Stellan Skarsgård is perfect as human trafficker Rael.

This time the casting went well.

The rest of the characters may seem extremely unsympathetic at first, but when you realize that they should be like that, it suddenly becomes clear to you that the creators really took care of the casting. Deputy Inspector Cyril Karn is a typical example of a so-called hooder. He does everything according to the rules and wants to achieve excellent results at any cost. As in the whole Empire, it reflects the “Nazi” nature. Bix’s boyfriend, Timm, is obnoxious from the start and does a great job in his role. The above can be applied to the vast majority of the characters, and although I’ve never seen ninety percent of the actors involved in my life (or at least I don’t remember), they are good at their craft.

Finally a solid Star Wars

You must have understood from the text that I like the Andor series. Moreover, I am excited. I loved the first three episodes and can’t wait for the next one. Admittedly, fans of the galactic action movie may not be as excited as I am due to the slower pace, but if you enjoyed the excellent Rogue One, you’ll feel right at home. The heavy atmosphere perfectly complements the spy intent, and the Orwellian hue penetrates the skin. Diego Luna is perfect for the role of Cassian Andor. He seems civilized and humane. This is not a superhero with so-called story armor, and I really appreciate that. He was skillfully backed up by Stellan Skarsgård as human trafficker Rael. The level of visual effects is very good. You can punch yourself in the forehead, but I like Andor more than The Mandalorian. It remains to be seen whether he will live up to his qualities in the rest of the installments. If, like me, you have bad taste for the tragic Obi-Wan, now is the time to try him out. Give Andor a chance, it’s great.
