The latest update to the Diablo 2: Resurrected PTR introduces a special broken endgame enchantment designed to bypass enemy immunity to certain types of damage. The enchantment prevents enemies from becoming completely immune, reducing any total resistance to 95%, allowing builds that target this type to deal with them. This update has proven very popular with some fans of an updated version of one of the best RPGs on PC, but other fans are concerned about what the update offers for the evolution of the series before the next release date of Diablo 4 in 2023.
Many positive comments in response to the original update post on the Diablo subreddit express enthusiasm that these broken charms allow all builds to be viable in all situations. In the past, builds like Frost Warlocks struggled in certain areas of the endgame, such as the high number of enemies immune to cold. “Finally, all versions can be grown anywhere,” says a popular comment, “I can’t believe it.” Another adds: “Now I can play with any spec and build I want for fun, instead of spending the bare minimum on pesky immunities.”
However, some players say that the introduction of Sundered Charms seems like a step towards simplifying builds: when players can complete any content with only one damage type, it removes some of the difficulty from the end of the part. Others complain that enchantments are much more useful for ranged builds than melee users, as they increase the damage the player takes from that damage type, meaning any physical builds are forced to take an additional 25% physical damage if you want to perform a physical enchantment.
A popular post on the Blizzard forums compared the change to Diablo III, with the original poster stating that allowing a character to farm everything unnecessarily makes the final game of Diablo 2: Resurrected easier. Several replies say that they are concerned that this change suggests that Diablo 4 will also follow the same path, providing more accessibility to use any version in any given situation. However, other comments point out that creating viable builds increases the potential variety of builds and that players are free to use whatever specs they want rather than being forced to pick a few particularly strong builds.
Diablo 2: Resurrected Ranked Season 2 will kick off on October 6; time will tell which of these PTR features will make it to the final game and in what form. Meanwhile, Diablo 3 Season 27 is currently underway and introduces a new holy item system, with a major patch to fight the gangs of Diablo Immortal, one of the crossover’s most controversial features.
