Respawn is updating some Apex Legends skins in an effort to address community concerns about “pay to win cosmetics.” EA’s Apex Legends is one of the best battle royale games that has seen huge success thanks to its wide range of cosmetic microtransactions. However, the low number of weapon skins drew criticism from players who felt that ADS (sights) was better than using other skins on the best Apex Legends weapons.
In a post on their website, developer Respawn states: “Competitive integrity has been and always will be the cornerstone of Apex Legends. As part of this, our standard sights are designed to encourage gamers to seek out the best optics. He addresses the iron sights directly, saying, “We also feel that skins shouldn’t affect the functionality of the sights.”
Two specific examples of skins being adjusted are given. The first is the Reactive Heatsink Skin for the VK-47 Flatline Rifle. Respawn notes, “We’ve heard feedback from some players that ADS is superior to any other skin available.” In contrast, the Flatline Revelations skin from the Gaiden event was modified to improve visibility. The team explains: “We felt that the side flaps created larger blind spots than anticipated, so we reduced them to improve visibility in ADS.”
These updates aimed at improving performance consistency across the range of cosmetic offerings will certainly be welcome. Respawn completes the statement: “We believe that any competitive advantage in Apex Legends should come from honing your skills, not from a perceived benefit of purchasing weapon skins.”
So far, the community has reacted positively to the news, with one much-appreciated comment saying, “Seems to be good for long-term gaming.” Many people say they’re now happy to be able to wear more of the skins they used to to avoid looking “awkward but cool,” though some players now fear for the future of some of their favorite cosmetics. Among those raised by community members are those from R99, including the Point Zero skin and the Season 7 jet skins.
