Future Ubisoft games must be innovative and high quality

Years ago, Ubisoft went astray and tried to make games that everyone would enjoy. The result was the number of open world projects that share the same mechanics or design philosophy. According to Ubisoft’s Fawzi Mesmar, it’s over. In the future, the French company will focus not on quantity, but on quality.

Former EA DICE designer Mesmar spoke about the new direction in an interview with IGN. To Ubisoft they want to create more focused and innovative games. They no longer care that not all players will like this game. Instead, the developers want to please a group of players and give them the opportunity to enjoy every hour spent in the game. In other words, this means that not all projects will be massive action RPGs with more than 100 hours of play time. For Ubisoft, the depth of the experience should be more important than the scale of the game..

With this approach, writers, programmers and designers will be able to innovate. The innovation should be visible in all future Ubisoft games.. This means, for example, a new game mechanic, an unusual approach to a genre, or a unique art style.

In short, every Ubisoft project must strive for excellence.

For now, we’ll take this as tentative promises, but Ubisoft’s new approach is a bit noticeable in the three recently announced Assassin’s Creed installments. Each of them must be different. For example AC: Mirage it won’t be an action RPG, but rather a stealth-focused action-adventure like the first installments in the series, and the next installment will be a massive RPG set in feudal Japan, and then a very different type of experience will follow. This is more of a mountain adventure in the era of witch hunts in 16th century Europe.
