Oculus Quest 2 gets a higher default refresh rate

There will be changes to the Oculus Quest 2 refresh rate as Meta is set to make 120Hz the default setting. Although the performance setting currently exists as an “experimental feature”, it looks like it will become the primary way to enjoy apps and games on a VR headset.

According to Oculus Quest 2 CTO and founder of Id Software John Carmac, the company will soon change the mode from 120 Hz to “default”. The veteran programmer also expresses his support for the change, saying it “prevents screen flickering at 60fps and makes the imperfect output tempo less jarring.”

Naturally, increasing the refresh rate to 120Hz could theoretically affect the Oculus Quest 2’s battery life. However, Carmack says it will only work when “explicitly requested by apps.” In other words, you’ll still need to play a compatible game like Superhot VR to take advantage of the faster visuals (and drain the juice from the headset).

Making 120Hz the default in Quest 2 is probably not a problem, as it will save players from having to search for an experimental option in settings. It also means that apps won’t switch to 90Hz unless users have given consent, which can cause the flicker mentioned by Carmack.

The best Meta VR headsets have increased tenfold since their 2020 debut, and this latest refresh rate tweak should help make the experience even better. However, Steam VR gamers are apparently ditching Oculus Quest 2 in favor of a mysterious alternative, which could be due to the recent price increase or the company’s decision to drop the Oculus brand.

Alternative VR headsets like the Pico 4 could soon challenge the Quest 2’s dominance, but Meta is also set to introduce Project Cambria, an augmented reality headset that may come with the Quest Pro tag. In line with Metaverse’s ambitions CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the headset is more of a work PC replacement than a gaming tech, so we’ll have to wait and see if it becomes a true successor to the Quest 2.
