The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU may come with two VRAM options

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 should be an extremely capable graphics card capable of running games at high frame rates in resolutions like 4K, but it needs a good amount of VRAM to reach that potential. It now appears that the green team is currently working on two models, each with different levels of GDDR6X memory.

New leaks from a Twitter user Zed_Wang they state that reference designs are in the works for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 12GB and 16GB models, each with a unique PCB (PCB) layout. It’s unclear if that means we can expect the company to release two GPU SKUs, but it does at least indicate that we could see a welcome jump in VRAM over the RTX 3080.

If Nvidia is looking to compete with AMD in the race for the best graphics card, launching an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 with 16GB of VRAM would be the way to go in my opinion. The Radeon RX 6000 series pixels already offer so much GDDR6 memory that it may be slower than GDDR6X, but capacity is arguably more important when it comes to higher resolution games.

We don’t yet know if AMD’s RDNA 3 GPUs will have the faster memory found on current generation Nvidia graphics cards, but it’s certainly in the green team’s interest to equip the RTX 4000 series with every possible benefit.
