Rockstar has posted credits for GTA 5 and GTA Online on its website as it considers the future of the Grand Theft Auto series and accelerates the development of GTA 6. While it is undeniably one of the best open world games, GTA 5 is nine years old. September 17 is a long time for any game, although it still consistently appears on the bestseller charts. Now developer Rockstar has posted a thank you to everyone involved in the crime game on its website, following the announcement that Rockstar is prioritizing GTA 6 development.
“Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online are a collaborative effort of our global team over the years,” reads the thank you page on the Rockstar Games website. “We want to acknowledge and thank everyone who has contributed to these games, from their initial release in 2013 to today.” It certainly feels like a farewell to the long-running crime game, which lines up with many rumors that the official reveal of GTA 6 could take place in October.
GTA 5 is currently the second best-selling video game of all time, with approximately 169 million copies sold to date, second only to Minecraft’s estimated sales of 238 million. It continues to thrive thanks to re-releases on modern hardware and the success of GTA Online, which remains one of the best multiplayer games to date. In March 2020, Dan Houser, one of the studio’s co-founders along with his brother Sam, and writer or co-writer of every GTA game since GTA: London, left Rockstar Games in search of new pastures.
GTA 6 leaks in July indicated that the next game in the series would likely have a Miami setting similar to Vice City. This rumor was later confirmed by members of Rockstar, who also speculated that the upcoming game would feature “some main characters in a story influenced by bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde”. It has been speculated that Rockstar plans to continually update the game’s map over time, adding new missions and locations throughout the life of the game, although it has been suggested that GTA 6’s release date is two years away.
