Project Zomboid Build 42 will make the map much bigger

Project Zomboid Build 42 will be another big update for the lo-fi zombie survival game, but one of the biggest changes will be to the Knox County map. The developers say they’re working on expanding three sides of the map, primarily the Kentucky side of the Ohio River, and that expansion is “likely” at some point in Build 42.

In a rough illustration provided in the latest Project Zomboid update article, the Knox map appears to be more than twice the size. The Indie Stone says it’s not ready to go into “forensic” details of what will be included in the new areas, but hints that the map development team is reverting to fictional versions of actual locations in Kentucky.

This means that some of the place names assigned by the Project Zomboid community to locations on the map will be changed to better reflect the game’s internal narrative. A small village on the Knox map has been non-canonically named Akron by the gaming community, which is a real town in Kentucky near Fort Knox and south of Brandenburg.

The location was known to the Project Zomboid team as Lake Faults, who say the reasons for this “will become clearer” after the map update. You can view current maps with many points of interest listed using Project Zomboid’s browser-based map tool.

The team shared several screenshots of updated areas of the map, including a school auditorium filled with (empty) folding chairs in front of a speaker’s podium and the interior of a simple church.

Indie Stone is currently working on fixing some crashes that have appeared in the latest unstable builds of Linux and says they have additional work to clean up version 41, so we don’t know when to expect version 42 yet, but when it will arrive. comes, we’ll have a lot more zombie-infested Kentucky to explore.
