Fans of turn-based tactics can look forward to Wartales Great Gosenberg, a free expansion coming in September that introduces a bustling trading city to a no-nonsense RPG. Also, your band of shady mercenaries will descend the streets of Gosenberg, a medieval city inspired by the wine regions of France, full of secrets to discover and towns to conquer.

PCGamesN took a look at what gamers can find at The Great Gosenberg during the Gamescom pre-event. The city is built around the production of wine, which is Gosenberg’s most valuable product, as well as its main source of trade. It is a traditional medieval city with quite a bit of wealth, but its diverse architecture is indicative of the class divide in the region. The city is divided into two districts separated by a canal and features building layouts you won’t find anywhere else in Wartales. Step onto the bridge and you will immediately understand the difference between the wealthy upper classes and the common people.

During your visit to Gosenberg, you will discover that one of the seven wealthy aristocrats who rule the city has been assassinated and it is up to you to find the killer. He can ask everyone in town for help by bartering or doing quests for people in exchange for information. With a university and a library, Gosenberg is a treasure trove of knowledge, but some people can be a little frugal with the truth. If you believe that someone is perverting the course of justice, you can bring them to justice, but be aware that you will have to pay compensation if you are found to have tarnished their reputation for no reason.

Gosenberg’s political center is the Merchant’s Palace, and Gosenberg’s grand St Elor’s Cathedral is still under construction, though it may be completed in the future as the game continues to develop. Of course, you’ll be able to find new arenas, items, crafting materials, and accessories as you explore.

Also, you can see Gosenberg’s merchant ship, the Magnificent, although the developers say there is no sea travel at the moment. Take a trip to the working class sector and you can also meet workers at the local brothel. Finally, you can take part in new mini-games like Rugby-style Brawl; this is still in the works, with the possibility of tournaments and sports fields for other regions in the future.

Great Gosenberg will land in Wartales for free at the end of September. In the meantime, check out the best tactical RPGs on PC and the best turn-based strategy games on PC for even more ways to satisfy your strategy cravings.
