Impressions of playing Lies of P

Before this year’s Gamescom, I classified this game as “another soul game that looks good, but definitely won’t be as good as the FromSoftware games.” But with each additional screenshot and trailer, this box bored me more and more, because the game looked really exceptionally beautiful and the atmosphere literally dripped from it. However, I was certain that (as has been the case with more or less all competing attempts so far) it simply wouldn’t play as well as Miyazaki’s “magic touch” titles. Ultimately, these considerations led me to include this game as a second game in my Gamescom plan around the individual games on display.

A large game section (apparently from the very beginning of the game, given the relatively lower enemy density and overall difficulty) was available in Cologne both at several stations in the public exhibition hall, and at several others in the modest booth of the commercial department of the fair. In both places, the booths were filled with Koreans, in whose homeland the game originated. I would like to thank them for (and not only) treating me in both places with humility and gratitude that I simply have not experienced from anyone at Gamescom either this year or last. It was clear that they were a bit out of their depth and felt (comically out of place in retrospect) a bit unsure if their game was good enough and had a chance of attracting “Western players”. By the way, they also mentioned in the business stand that they didn’t have some slots booked – there just wasn’t enough interest in their game before the show.

I was the first to confirm that the game really looks very good – this is exactly the case when the graphics are so elaborated that the screenshots and videos do not convey them enough. You have to see it in motion with your own eyes to notice all the nuances and appreciate the extreme care that has gone into not only the models, textures and animations, but also the lighting or special effects. This is an extremely narrative game that can stand up to the best. By the way, I played the PC version (it ran absolutely smoothly, despite the extraordinary graphical sophistication and speed of the action) with an Xbox controller. In addition, I also had headphones, but the sound and music could not be judged sufficiently, given the surrounding traffic, plus I commented on the impressions to colleagues, and also politely refused the hostess, who tried to advise me how to play the game. There was no need for this, because the controls and even the UI and campfire mechanics worked much the same as in my favorite (and platinum) Bloodborne.

Sure, we can pick up on the nuances of what’s going on in the alternative Belle Époque instead of the slightly earlier Victorian Gothic, but don’t tell me you can’t immediately see the connection between the two games when you watch faded shots. dirty streets full of makeshift fires and creeping shadows. The same applies, for example, to certain weapon animations or the already mentioned UI elements and mechanics, including stamina, harvesting souls/energy from your corpse upon death, and others. Even a cluster of enemies with a random mini-boss or an environment structure with multiple levels and stairs seemed very similar to me.

Impressions of playing Lies of P lopcPerhaps the only major difference I’ve noticed is the lack of a fast enough attack heal after taking damage, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be unlocked by an item later in the game. Otherwise, of course, the important difference is that instead of tentacles, you will fight robotic (puppet) monsters, while the whole story is inspired by the tale of Pinocchio.

One way or another, it seems pointless to me to hide that the creators are simply “inspired” and the game clearly seems like a spiritual sequel to Bloodborne. But most importantly: it is controlled and played with the same precision and dexterity as the source of this inspiration. Which I really didn’t expect, and because of this, Lies of P immediately took first place in my imaginary hit list of what I played and saw at Gamescom this year. I returned to the game counters a few more times during the day because I couldn’t get enough of it. And it was very nice to see how, thanks to the rapidly spreading reputation of this game, interest in it also increased throughout the day from other visitors to the fair.

Lies of P will be released in 2023 on PC, X1, XSX|S, PS4 and PS5. In the meantime, you can add it to your wishlist on Steam.
