In May, Swedish gaming giant Embracer announced the purchase of Square Enix’s western studios, namely Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal. The Japanese company wanted to get rid of the research, so they even sold it for a very low price. In addition to individual teams, Embracer thereby acquired the rights to brands such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain. However, the deal was not closed until recently, which only happened this Friday, August 26th.
Embracer confirmed this in a press release stating, among other things, that these three studios will not be incorporated into an existing subsidiary (such as THQ Nordic or Plaion), but instead an entirely new twelfth division will be created. for them will be created, whose name was not yet known. It will be led by a team led by Phil Rogers, who served as CEO of Square Enix’s European and US branches.
We should get more information sometime in the future from the studios themselves and Embracer as such.
We are pleased to announce the completion of the acquisition @CrystalDynamics, @EidosMontrealand will be renamed soon @SquareEnixMtl! The companies will make up the 12th task force, led by Phil Rogers. We warmly welcome all new colleagues. https://t.co/9t5nHktjEo
